I have been debating on an 8" or a 10.5" barrel for my sbr build. I already have an AAC Cyclone suppressor in jail.

I was wondering if I would miss having the ~150 fps with supers or would hate the extra 2.5 inches of barrel.

I am going to be loading all my own ammo, so I won't loose much on the subs as far as speed goes.

What does everyone else think? Anyone here tried both and have a preference?

It's  probably slightly easier to get the 10.5" to cycle unsuppressed, but you reload so that helps. If you go short, make sure it's got a fast twist for heavy subs.

I went with an 8" seekins barrel.  If I want supersonic velocity and range I'll shoot my 556 SPR upper.

I was looking at a 8" CMMG 1/7 twist. Would an 8.5 with an 1/8 twist stabilize 220 grain subs adequately?

My thinking is that a SBR is supposed to be SHORT.

I have the 8.2 noveske barrel it cycles sub's and supers unsuppressed.

Mine too. I run an H1 instead of the H2 they recommend and the bolt locks back with subs and no can.

As far as handling, I had a 7.5" .223 upper, that I thought was a little too short.  But if you plan to only shoot suppressed, it shouldn't make a difference.

I'll eventually get a short 300BLK upper to go with the 16" gun.  I would most likely go with something in the 10" range.

Get the 8".  A .300blk burns all its powder in the first 9".  Anything over that is a waste.  I run a Spikes T2 buffer in my 8.5" SBR with a CMMG barrel.

I'd go with 8"  That what I have and it has run well.

^this.

I went from 9 to an 8.5 Rainier select w/1:8.5 twist. I reload and shoot mostly powder-puff for it but does great with supers. And stabilizes 194 gr lehighs (150m anyway) personally I think the 8.5 " is more accurate than the 9. Both are 5r rifling. But im sure its make qulity, not length.

aac designed the round, they also make a 9 inch upper. I think 8.5 or 9 inch is the way to go.

I have the Noveske 10.2" tube, and I'm going to send it to ADCO to have it shortened.  The 10 isn't bad, but my coworker's 8 looks and handles better.

I'll post my standard answer.  I pig, coyote, and deer hunt with the 300BLK.  I use Nosler 125gr ballistic tip bullets.  Nosler says they need 1800fps for "optimal" expansion.  Chronographing my Nosler accuracy reloads with MY actual barrels and plugging the data into a ballistics calculator to determine at what distance the velocity drops to 1800fps, I get the following distances:

8" = 100yd
9.5-10.3" = 150yd
16" = 200yd

Now, if you don't hunt, then don't worry about it.  If you use a different bullet for hunting, check with the maker to get the expansion velocity needed and then do your calculations.

Above bullet recovered from hog last week.  Impact velocity approximately 1977fps.  Remaining weight of 109.5gr.  Compared favorably with Nosler's picture of the same bullet at 1900fps impact velocity.  This is the first bullet I've recovered from a hog; they've exited before, but this guy had a thicker shield, and I found this on the opposite side just under the shield.

I think 8" will be fine for my hog hunting. The only place I have gone, it was a 50 yard shot. I just need to find a good bullet that will expand for subs.

My preference is for my 10". I do not have any plans for subsonic ammo and use mine for deer, hog, yotes, nutria and hopefully a black bear in the next couple of years. Having already taken a black with a .41 Mag I have confidence in the 300 Blk under the right circumstances. I am currently using 125 Nosler BTs and Factory Barnes 110s as my go to hunting ammo and the 10" gives me that little extra. As stated the round burns up in a 9" but a few extra fps doesn't hurt. I may even go up to an 11 - 12" down the road.

Barnes VOR-TX should expand to 300 yards from an 8" barrel (down to 1350fps).  Go short - you won't miss the FPS.

My 125gr SST load will expand to about 120yd out of my 8" barrel - it leaves at 1950fps.

You're not likely to see 150 fps difference.  I chrono'ed the same load out of both a 9" and 16" and THAT difference was 150 fps.

If you're going to run suppressed, go 8".  If not 10.5".  Just my $.02...
