I'm  looking to start a 22LR SBR project and I am soliciting the advice of you gentleman. What Manufacturer do you recommend? Should I buy a pistol configuration or a rifle configuration and cut the barrel down to size? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. And as always, pictures are appreciated.
I currently have a 416-22 rifle. Is this a good platform? Would it be easy to cut this barrel down? TIA

Taccom 4" upper. Runs very well and keeps bulk pack subsonic.  With a suppressor it is still a very short package.

It'd be hard to find something more reliable than a S&W 15-22, especially at the PSA Labor Day price of $299.

Mine now looks like this, with 4.5" barrel and Spectre II:

Just as the others have suggested taccom for just an upper.  S&W 15-22  if you want a purpose built rifle that is going to stay that way.  Upper allows you to use other short uppers with only 1 stamp thou.  . It depends on what you want.

With the deal posted above it is not much more to sbr a 15-22, just the cost of cutting the barrel down, and the stamp.  The taccom upper/parts I ordered yesterday came to over $415, and that did not come with a handguard or assembled lower.

What do you guys think of me using the HK 416-22 as an SBR/Suppressor host?

Go with the less common route - 10/22

If it were me I would say no.  Because it is a dedicated/proprietary host. It  is not well supported in the configuration you are wanting.  What if something breaks?  Factory warrenty is out the window.  Parts will be harder to come by.

With a  ciener 22lr type conversion you are not limited to brand for barrel, fcg, bcg, mags, lower, rails, etc...   It is well supported.  Also you are not limited to a caliber.  22lr got hard to find not to long ago.  .223/5.56 was almost the same $ per rd.  The $200 tax (and the wait) stays with the serial numbered receiver, make it count.

At least that is what I would do.

I would not recommend the 416-22 for the reasons above. The major components on that rifle are proprietary and you will need parts down the road. A Ciener-type conversion and dedicated barrel is the way to go.

I've built up a few that way and they run perfectly. I also did a 10/22 SBR which is something just a little different and equally fun to shoot:

Only SBR 22 so far is my 10/22.

Will have dedicated AR 22 in the future.

The 22 bolt carrier group drops in and uses a standard 556 trigger and barrel?

Yes, or you can get a dedicated upper for more accuracy...

I would go with a Ruger 10/22 takedown SBR with an integrally suppressed barrel. (2) tax stamps suck buts its badass gun.

I borrowed this picture from a google search:

From top to bottom:
1. Standard AR-15 BCG
2. "Ciener"-style rimfire BCG with chamber adapter for use in standard 5.56 barrels
3. "Ciener"-style rimfire BCG with collar for dedicated .22 barrels.

Does CMMG sell built uppers with everything I need with a 4.5" barrel and no handguard just a barrel nut.  I'd probably put something like a MI gen2 ss on it.

So all I need upper wise is that, Upper receiver, charging handle and barrel nut?
Gas deflector recommended if shooting suppressed?
Forward assist handy for .22?

All you need is a upper receiver, barrel nut, and a charge handle.  Id get the CMMG anti-jam charge handle.  And no, there is not a need for any kind of deflector.

Not necessary, some say yes, others like myself don't use them.

I have a few 10/22's collecting dust in the storage unit. After looking at some of the very nicely done 10/22 SBR's, i'm rethinking my next NFA project.

Sanman28, how long are your Ruger 10/22 barrels?  How accurate are they? I already have a dedicated 4.5inch Spikes St-22 upper and can't decide if I want to SBR a Ruger

They shoot well. Both 4.5" barrels. The black one will pop squirrels with ease. The ss one is a norrell FA and is really just a range toy.

Eta:  not sure why the pic is upside down. Its right side up on my monitor.

What size rails are y'all using with the spectres and sparrows so they stick out around an inch?

Depends on barrel length. The Spectre is an inch longer, so that also matters.

I cut my 15-22 handguard down to 8" for a 4.5" barrel and Spectre II.

My paperwork was finally approved for this Innovative Arms SBR.
It ate Federal Champion ammo without a hiccup and is super quiet.
