Assembling an 11.5 SBR and looking for recommendations. VFG, AFG or nothing? Full size vs short VFG? Quick detach or not?

Let me hear your thoughts.

For me it depends on how long the handguard is.

If it's 11" or so I'd use an AFG.

If it's 9" or less I'd go with a VFG.

I found the AFG doesn't feel right to me unless I can get my hand out a bit. My 16" bbl rifle have 15" handguards.

I've tried the AFG on 7" and 9" handguards and it felt too squished up to me.

On an SBR I definitely prefer a VFG because it is much more comfortable for my wrist. On a longer rifle with at least a midlength rail I prefer an AFG. As far as VFG's go, I haven't found anything better than the Magpul MOE, especially at the price point.

I definitely like the AFG2 over the AFG.

Unity Tactical has a new vfg out that will mount directly to a keymod rail. It looks a lot less bulky compared to the BCM, only downside is it looks kind of shiny.

I was a huge AFG guy, newer builds have been built with no VFG or AFG, just rail covers and a hand stops.

Leverless Tango Down shorty is my favorite VFG.

I think the FAB-Defense Tactical Folding Grip marketed by the Mako is perfect for SBR etc.., I use them on my SBR, and MG's.

The cheapest place to find it will be AmmToGo

I'm really liking BCM's short VFG.  They make a picatinny version and a keymod version.

No VFG or a stubby (or hand stop) as a place to index your hand on the rail.

I've been using the Magpul XTM hand stop kit on my SBRs and I like it a lot.  I also have a couple guns with the AFG, it's nice too but I think the hand stop kit puts my hand at a better angle than the AFG.

I like my Tango Down stubby, used more as a handstop than anything else

I use VFGs more as a handstop.  Considering I have been focusing more on ammo and magazines, I've just been buying KAC VFGs off of the EE whenever I need one.  They work great and can be had for cheap.

It works on Troy alpha rail, too. It's very good.

I like the bcm short vertical grip for picatinny mounting.

I like my Tango down full size grip.

I bought the stubby one first, but it was just too short to get a good grip on, so I sent it back and got the full size.

Well made, rock solid, easy to install, and has a pocket for a light switch.

Try out a few...afg, vg, handstops, and none at all.  figure out what you like.  They're not too expensive and the EE seems to gobble small parts like that faster than i can throw them on there.

I use a Tangodown QD mini VFG, works well and I like it.

That kind of stuff is very subjective.  You just have to try them and see what works for you.

Having said that, I like stubby grips, but it's against my religion to pay $80 for one.  I have a few Archangel stubbies, and I'm happy with them.  They run $18 to $20.

Not a fan of VFG's. I do have a Grip Pod I purchased off the EE as a cheap bipod for sighting my rifles in. YMMV
