You may want to consider going 6.8 though due to the velocity loss of 5.56 in a barrel size that short. I'm getting the 8.5 inch version in 6.8spc. |

If its just a plinker, you'll be fine.
If its a home defense gun, either go up to 10.5" (or 10.3", whatever Noveske does), or go 300BLK or 6.8 for that short. 5.56 is velocity dependent to be effective, and it doesn't have all that much velocity coming out of a barrel that short. Someone may come in and say that for HD situations, that length might be fine. They may be right, I just know that for any sort of real distance, a little over 10" is needed in a 5.56 rifle. I went 12.5" for my 5.56 SBR. |

As others have said, if you choose 5.56, I'd suggest no shorter than 10.3 or 10.5. The velocity loss and fragmentation issues are bad enough at 10.3/5 that it does not appear to me to be worth the further compromises by going any shorter. Noveske guns will run no matter the barrel length...that is not an issue. If you insist on something in the 7-8 inch range, than contemplate switching calibers as referenced previously.

I have a 7.5" Noveske diplomat, it's a great accurate and relieble weapon. I don't feel any problems with the loss of velocity out of a 7.5" barrel when used for Home Defense. At typical HD ranges, way under 100 yards, if not way under 25 yards, and in all reality "in the same room ranges" this loss of velicity will not be a factor in my opinion. It's not like I plan on shooting out to 300m with it. If I need to address issues at that distance or greater I have other longer range capable units.
Unless it's a SHTF situation any HD for me is likely to be well within the legally defenseable ranges 7-10m or closer. But that all said, it just comes down to your own personal preferences. And a 6.8mm/10"+/- would be a great choice too. |
