That sucks, your best bet is to contact the NFA branch and see if they can assist you.
Otherwise, you're going to have to pay another $200 to make it an SBS.

Yeah probably didn't realize that the making stamp is $200 on a Form 1 for all the NFA firearms even the AOW. However you had to actually type or write in AOW.
How could you write that in?? |

So im going to call the NFA tomorrow and see what they say. Could I just cut the Butt stock off and just have a hand grip ? or is that still considered a SBS ? |

From what i recall, an AOW can only made from a shotgun that never had a stock attached as you stated. It would really come down to how the shotgun was trasferred on the 4473 form. IF it was transfered as a long gun i dont see how it was approved as an AOW, seems like there would be some kind of cross reference to how the manufacturer classified that gun's serial number. maybe it doesnt work that way though. i'm interested to see what ATF says about it. seems like it would be an easy fix since the tax is the same.

The form 1 doesn't list how the donor firearm was last transferred, so the ATF doesn't necessarily know if/unless they go research it more in the future. But... OP doesn't want a stockless AOW, he wants an SBS. Best not to transgress if you have a (relatively) painless way forward. OP can either get ATF to amend and approve the F1 to SBS (very possible), or cancel the AOW F1, eventually get a refund, and submit a new F1 for the SBS he wants to make. |

Actually it might work out for me. I was looking making clone of a Ithaca auto & burglar. So i might just switch them i can make a custom grip from wood. Talk to lovely NFA branch this morning they said i could not reverse it But they might be able to change it. From AOW to SBS. Just waiting on a call back. |

IIRC if you do not make the AOW you can cancel the stamp and get your $200 back. You have to write a letter letting them know that you never made.
You would then have to file another form to make it a SBS. MAHA |

That's why one should never abbreviate when filling in forms. Spell it out.

When it come to a refund it takes along time lol. I sent in a amended form 1 should have it approved in the next month or 2 according to the person i spoke to. |
