I'm looking to mill 0.020" off the top of a rear sight to true up point of impact. The sight is heat treated 4140 bar stock for a 1911 Novak low mount carry style. Millrite mill.

What's the best way to minimize tooling marks or clean them up when finished? I want to maintain the sight edges as crisp as possible.

I know this doesn't really answer your question but if it was me I'd use a surface grinder to get a good finish. Rough it down with a 100 grit cbn wheel and take the last .0005 off with a 600 grit diamond wheel.

Good info - thanks.
I don't have a surface grinder. If I had one that's what I would use.

I have seen guys use grinding wheels on a mill for small jobs...

Gesswein sells finishing stones you can use to hand polish the marks down with. I have a set that goes from 220 all the way up to 1200 grit. They're magic.

I had a local shop surface grind it.
It turned out great.
Thx.
