I bought a Remington 700 ADL Varmint as part of the $309 deal through Cabelas last month and am wanting to thread the barrel for a APA little bastard brake.

I have a CNC lathe and the gun was cheap enough that I don't mind taking a stab at it myself especially since there's 26" of barrel so I can take a few tries at it.

My question is how does one properly chuck up on a tapered barrel?

We always made a collet.

Then you have a cylinder to hold.

Or you can turn a short straight section and then remove it.

Aluminum shim stock or even heavy cardstock works pretty well. At least in a 4-jaw.

The problem I foresee using a collet is that Remington doesn't put an even smooth taper on their barrels.

That or I suppose I could whip up a simple spider.

Can you turn it between centers?
I would do this, if it was an option.

You make it to measure on a specific length-position on the barrel.

Still use on off side spider also.

Vibration and precision reaming do not go together well.

The size of the commercial equipment (factory)  is astounding.

had a chance to work on a hammer forge 'barrel maker' years ago.
It was destroying the sensors for the readouts.

A small thick cylinder of steel became a chamber and barrel over a relatively short cycle.
At the time not very many minutes.

How do you plan on indicating the bore if you are just holding it at one point?
ETA, I would make the spider, or something outboard if the headstock is short enough.

Face plate, dead center, lathe dog on headstock and live center on tailstock.

Soft jaws on a 4-jaw chuck, turn the taper you need on the soft-jaws...
