A local gunsmith that I trust just soldered on a front sight base to my new Mossberg 590A1 barrel and ended up with some strange discoloration that neither he nor I have ever seen before - it's dark and shiny, and almost looks like paint or resin.  Reparking will be no big deal, but I'm curious - has anyone here aver seen this kind of discoloration after soldering, and is there a way of removing it?

I wonder if flux baked it's way into the finish...

Not surprising, since I didn't post a pic...

Flux will discolor a park finish.

It is often not removable.

All fluxes contain salt compounds.
They WILL cause corrosion.

I think I'm going ahead with the repark, then - the factory parkerizing isn't particularly impressive, and I had planned on a refin being needed from the start.  Thanks!

Yep, the front sight is not solders on, but brazed on with silver solder instead.
Due to the heat point needed to get the silver solder to flow and  bond correctly, it will discolor the parkerizing every time.

Brazing differs from soldering by clearance and typical melt temperature.

Small clearances and over the mid 800F mark for brazing.

Silver and copper-silver alloys are relatively common.

Small amounts of phosphorous in the alloy can make it somewhat 'self fluxing' on some metals.

Clearances are often reduced into the barely a few thousandths of an inch range.

Actual silver brazing flux will form a smooth, hard shiny coating.
Old timers called it "solder glass" because of the dark shiny look.

You need to get it off before having the barrel refinished.

He stated that it wasn't silver soldered. He will clean it up before reparking.

There are now multiple type of silver brazing flux.

While older mixes do leave a thin glossy coating not all the new ones do.

Some of the older ingredients are relatively toxic if the 'smoke' from them is inhaled.
