If you are using different forearms on the shotgun, then leave the barrel lug alone, and fit each new forearm iron's instead.
Receiver side of the forearm iron before the latch, there is the front step wall that mates up with the barrel lug back wall (receiver side) to set spacing between the back of the lug and the front of the receiver. These needs to be set back towards the receiver to allow each forearm set to head space correctly to the barrel/receiver front end.
As for if the forearm is seating to the barrel correctly (forearm metal not binding up on action opening), then the forearm iron is sett too deep in the wood (latch not catching the V in the barrel lug), and what is causing the lack of latching. Here, use some bedding under the forearm metal to slightly raise it up flusher to the wood surface, instead of going after the barrel lug V instead.
