THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I have a suppressed 4.5" 10/22 SBR. It cycles bulk pack Federal ammo and subsonic ammo just fine and I'd like to talk about making it cycle CCI Quiet 22 ammo. This is advertised as 710 fps, and currently I have to hand cycle it.

Do you think there's any hope of making this happen? Midwayusa has replacement bolts and bolt handle assemblies for $30 and $9, respectively, so if I screw something up it's not the end of the world.

These are the things I was thinking of trying, kind of in the order I'd like to attempt them.
  • Polish the contact surfaces in the receiver.
  • Polish the contact surfaces on the bolt.
  • Cut some loops off of the recoil spring. (how many?)
  • Drill some weight out of the bolt. (where from? Do I need to worry about keeping the bolt balanced?)
  • Modify the hammer spring. (I like this least because if I have to change parts out when I want to shoot this ammo, I'd prefer they be the easier bolt and bolt handle assembly).
The gun already has the polymer buffer.

What else should I consider doing, and what am I not thinking of? Is trying to make this ammo cycle from a 4.5" barrel just asking too much?

You need less reciprocating mass and a lighter recoil spring. I wouldn't shorten the stock spring, a little preload is needed to hold the bolt into battery. A spring with a lighter spring rate might not strip cartridges from the magazine.

This might help. The Volquartsen .22 short conversion kit uses a lighter bolt, reduced power hammer spring, and different recoil spring, so maybe some combination of those could work.

Oh that looks promising. I'm going to take my more well-worn 10/22 bolt and try that.

Ramping the rear bottom of the bolt will help

If it was me, I would mill a pocket in the underside of the bolt. The same general size as a Norrell Arms full auto 10/22 bolt.
If that was enough mass removed to cycle the CCI Quiet's I would keep it. If not I would sell it on the EE. with a sliding weight piece of stock.
Anybody with a Norrell or the Gat trigger would want it. All they would need to finish it off would be...
1. The sliding weight.
2. The weight pins.
3. Welding the pins in place.
4. The lock pin detent.
A drill press and dremil would be all they need to complete it before it is welded. MUCH easier than having NO mill.
Or finish it yourself and sell it for $200.
