I've heard the iron and wet cloth method works very well, but I've never used it, couldn't comment on how it affects the finish.

The iron/wet towel does work.It may take a number of times to raise a deep or large dent.Don't let the towel or rag get dry and scorch the wood.It will almost certainly ruin the finish in that area.If the stock has an oil finish you can sand the area lightly and touch up with an finish.

Just to get a feel for it, you may want to try it out on a shovel handle or something first. It does work very well, and isn't that hard, but if you are worried, it never hurts to try a practice run on something you don't care about too much first.

I use my soldering iron for this ( iron, not soldering gun), much easier than a clothes iron if that's what everyone is talking about. It's best to sand the finish away first so the steam will reach the wood quicker and yes, it can take several applications to raise a large or deep dent. Let the area dry very well before refinishing the spot.
