If no one has mentioned it expect to spend what the machine cost on the tooling to use it.

Luckily you can stretch the tooling out over an even longer time by 'making do.'

Try not to be like one of my machinist buds though.

He would run short of taps  in the middle og a job and call me at 2 AM needing something.

Murphy's Law says always but two of each size tap (at least).

Maybe they trade stories in the storage drawer but if you only have one it WILL break at the worst moment.

Probbaly below the surface in the work.

They seem to know what sizes of broken tap extractors are in the other drawer.

This is so true.

When I was still in college in the very early 80's I bought about $400 worth of steel and built 9 machines with it in the college machine and welding shops. I was paid $1700/ea.

I went out and bought a used car and used motorcycle and paid off my sisters tuition for the year. This project took about 5 weeks and the income potential just floored my dad. He offered to front the money to buy a BP mill and a good lathe and I told him no.

I had to explain to him that all the inspection tooling, layout tooling, and support tooling would add another $50K to the price before you would have what it takes to really be able to do the job yourself. I told him I was going to buy all the gazillion little tools you need and move on up to the bigger ticket items after all the nickle and dime stuff was in house. That was 34 years ago.

10 years ago I started buying bigger iron. In Feb 2016 I bought an 7700 lbs CNC Turning center. Tooling up that puppy is going to cost me a few dollars for sure, but what is worse is I found out I will have to spend about $16K just to get and upgraded main panel and wiring to be able to get the GoGo juice for that machine. Earlier Quotes had put the cost at $3K-$8K which was doable. So it will sit for awhile and wait on the CNC mills to bring in the cash for more power.

That tool and cutter grinder is a copy of a Deckle S0. There are many Chi and Indi knock offs, few great, most are garbage. There is a slightly bigger unit I want, that can sharpen taps and multi-flute C-sinks very easily. I wish I had the model number handy.

YOunger budy just called.

Broke an expensive carbide cutter.

He tried to use a 1/2 inch solid carbide cutter on a less than solid setup.

It shattered almost immediately.

He is a younger mechanical engineer with little hands on machining experience.
And an older badly worn smaller mill (his first).

Told him to stay on the smaller end (like 1/4 inch OD) and use steel tooling until he has a little more experience.

Dropped off an older (as in under diameter from sharpening) steel 1/4 inch FB end mill.

Told him to take small cuts (no more than 1/16 inch).
Showed him how to lock the table down on all but the axis being used for the cut.

I just ordered a lathe.  Going to go back and look for tooling suppliers in here.  Thanks.
