I'm debating on the mp5k or getting a usc and doing the ump conversion love the styling on both, the ump would be more and I'm wondering if someone has both and is it really worth the extra cost?

Honestly, the UMP is kinda crappy. If you want a UMP, go for it, but you should try to find a rental range and handle one first.

Thank you that's what I was wondering they have always looked super sweet. I guess I'll go ahead and get the mp5k project started then!

I own both a USC/UMP and MP5K, and I wouldn't part with either of them.  Being a big Bond fan, especially Casino Royale and QoS, I had to have an UMP!  In the end I think they both cost roughly the same...not cheap, but I spared no expense on either one.

If I were in your position I would go with the UMP first simply because they are harder to find now, whereas there are plenty of options for a MP5K later down the road.

IF I could choose only one though, it would have to be the MP5K.  It's such a smooth shooter, compact package, and looks badass.  Plus being a metal receiver, once it starts to look a little worn it's easy to get it refinished and looking like new again.  With the UMP, I'm more inclined to leave it as a wall hangar because my OCD would drive me nuts once I started seeing handling marks on the polymer receiver.  You know, those shiny lines on an otherwise matte surface.  Yeah I got a problem.

Yea that's me too I was leaning more towards the K because I have let's say "some" 9mm around. I have an mp5 sbr and it's by far my favorite gun the K just looks badass and is iconic. Plus now I have a EVO that's also an sbr!

Well, if you already have MP5 mags, It might be smart to go with a K just to simplify life and spare parts.

I did the UMP conversion but left the 16 inch barrel. I still really enjoy shooting in this configuration. I did a steel challenge shoot with it and had a blast. I'll be honest, my shoulder was feeling a little bruised after the ~130 rounds fired during the course(Man card revoked, I know). The .45 in a blowback gun feels more manly than a 9mm roller locked gun for sure.

I will say that I would never trade my UMP/USC for an MP5K.

A buddy of mine did a full Tom Bostic, no expense spared build. It was super cool but I honestly I wasn't that impressed by it.  He wasn't either and sold it during all the panic buying after sandy hook.  He did make a ton of money off of it though. I would look else ware unless you want a 45.

Judging by your current trend, you'll end up with both eventually haha.  I love SMG style guns and it's my goal to collect them all!

I'm here to vote "full-size MP5."

Don't buy a k unless you've handled both.  I'm of average stature and I still find the k cramped.  I miss my old full-size.

I did the K using an MKE for about 1800 after parts and stamp. This was back when the MKEs were around 1200. And I like the ability change the K to the PDW format pretty quickly. To me, the cost of the UMP was too much to justify.

2020, you'll be shooting my reverse stretch in a bit but for now I'll weigh in and say thay I'm 6'5 and don't find it uncomfortable.  It's a small gun, but not uncomfortable.  A B&T UMP style stock goes a long way here.  It makes for a very comfortable LOP.

I wanted a .45 cal SBR and after doing a cost-benefit analysis, I decided to go with the Kriss Vector instead of the UMP conversion. I'm very happy with my Vector.

Yea I've looked at those I'm not a big fan of the styling. If nothing else I'll just keep saving for an MAC11 and get the lage upper to keep it more sub gun like!

I have had a chance to shoot a full auto ump 45, that was fun. That having been said I own the scorpion evo and I found it to be more fun to shoot and so much cheaper. I would advise going with  the fallowing.
HK mp5 or mp5k
Or the 22lr variants witch are  overall the cheapest
Evo 3 s1 (just puts the biggest grin on my face)
At the end of the day it's your choice I hope that helps, and mag cost would be some thing to consider.

UMP's are pretty cool. Maybe get both

In all seriousness though, if you really want a UMP I'd go with that.  USC's are only going to get harder to find.

It's true they will only get harder to obtain, unless you don't mind dealing with the tarus knock off or we manage to get LWRC to release there ump gun to the public in a  relatively low price. I did see that some one started to produce a ump clone upper no idea who it was or if it ever was pushed to release but it was ugly as sin.

Here is the LWRC UMP clone, hopefully they will be produced more than the USC and half the cost or with in the cost of an mp5. Till then grab the USC and have a ball. If I could get one for a grand I would do the conversion but that is a pipe dream now.

Have you never heard of LWRC before? This will be $2500, at the very minimum.

That would be half the cost of a converted USC all said and done. (USC $2,000, ump lower $400, mag ect....) so $2,500 would be much cheaper than a USC conversion at that price. Let's hope there not looking at it to be $3,400 pulse.

I would look in to the mac10 for auto cause they have more accessories and you can convert them to 9mm, while the 380 can only convert to 22lr and anything 380 and smaller.

We issue UMP-40's at work and I have a lot of trigger time with them.
In short, I would avoid them. We keep them for our boat and ATV guys who "need" (their claim, not mine) something smaller than a standard M4 and as an instructor I oversee them doing their UMP quals. I seriously think the only reason we have them is because H&K threw them in when we bought a shit ton of pistols from them. A total fail on our part.
Because 75% of the weight is in the bolt they have this tendency to rock and flex back and forth. It literally feels like a brick being rattled back and forth in a shoe box.
The factory H&K stock is also junk. To make it flexible enough to lock against the tab in the folded position the entire stock assembly was made to be able to flex. The end result is that it just has too much play in it. It makes it uncomfortable to shoulder and it doesn't inspire much confidence that it will stand the test of time.
Like another poster stated, I would fine some place to handle and play with one before committing to purchase a civvy legal version, then deciding if you want to dump $3K in one. If you want something that looks cool, get an airsoft UMP and practice room clearing with that. Want to put 9mm/.40 S&W  holes close together on paper while enjoying yourself? Buy a Beretta CX4 or pistol caliber AR.
dos centavos.

$3k plus for a semi auto pistol caliber gun...  a MAC for $5k still seems cheap by comparison.

I had an UMP with the grease gun conversion, it was okay.   But it was still large, for an SBR in a pistol caliber, I would want something smaller.
