I need some glass for my lever guns.. I'm old and cant see crap anymore.  the standard iron sights are a 100% no go.. anyway, whats a good scope / mount for these rifles?  I want something compact, like 1x4, or a 1x6.. 100 yard shots... 200 yards max.  I was considering a leupold, as they have a kind of " classic' look to them and they look great on lever guns.

what do you guys suggest?     cost for your suggestions please.

UPDATE ! ! ! !

got it done ! !   leupold VXIII 1.5x5, on a game reaper mount.

love it !

I put a Nikon fixed p-223 on my 45-70, with their app we were able to hit steel at over 300 yards. I put a red dot on my lever .44 as I don't shoot further than 100 yards with it.

I have always had good luck with a Weaver #63B base and Burris Signature Zee rings on my Marlin levers.  The rings use the plastic inserts and allow you to make initial scope set up adjustments to compensate for the top of the receiver being machined funny.

I have used several different scopes with this set up.  The Weaver classic K4 is a decent scope for a lever gun as would be any fixed power Leopold as you mentioned.  I have a 1-3 power Weaver on a 444p that has been good too.

If you have the funds I would look for an old Leupold m-8 fixed x4 scope. Very light short, fast on target and no adjusting it. Your asking about mounting it on brush guns,  KISS.

Easy, go with a Leupold low power variable.

Leupold VX 2 1-4 or Leupold VX 3 1.5-5

Talley QD mounts.  Better than the Leupold QD because the Talley bases are low enough that you can use the factory irons when the scope is off.

Zero the irons for 50 yards, and the scope as you choose.  I did 100 yards as mine is a woods gun.

I caught a refurb Leupold FX-II Ultralight 2.5x 20mm scope at Midway for $162.  Looking forward to putting that one on the 45-70 when it arrives, and moving the Weaver 1-3x to the 1894 or an AR or something.

Regular price (new) $269.  Leupold 2.5x fixed power

I went with a ranger point precision mount, talley qd rings, and a Nikon inline 3-9 muzzleloader scope with long eye relief for my Henry. I found the glass on the Nikon to be better to the comparable leupold scope (can't remember the model)

Redfield makes a 2-7 power that's compact and under 200 bucks. They seem to have nice clarity and a good warranty if you have a problem.

I understand the old eyes buckhorn sights issues.  I went with a Lever Scout rail from XS. I paired that with a ghost ring rear sight as a backup to whatever optic I chose to use.

This is the first iteration with a holographic sight.  That's since been replaced with a Nikon XR.  Again I made the change because my eyes need more help.

EGW Picatinny Rail ~ $40
Weaver V3 1-3x20 ~ $150
Leupold QD Low Rings ~ $45

Prices are from memory, so could be a bit higher/lower.

I had a 2.5X Leupold scout on a XS rail and liked it a lot, about $300 plus $50 for the base. This setup seems to work well with lever guns. Might be worth a shot if you've never tried it.

I am going to run a Leupold 2.5x FX-II Ultralight 2.5x20mm scope on my 45-70.  I figure a fixed power scope is less likely to get beat up by 45-70 loads.  Retail cost is ~$269ish.

I'm probably going to put a Weaver V3 1-3x20mm scope on my 1894.  Cost is ~$180 or so.

I currently have the Leupold mounted to the 45-70 with a Weaver rail and Burris low rings, but I haven't shot this setup yet.

I will probably do something similar with the 1894, but if money were no object, I'd love some QD Leupold rings on at least the 1895.

I would suggest trying it. IIRC the rings on that are the low Warnes. The rear sight gets in the way and the bikini cover won't fit (around the ocular). The mediums worked better for me on that rifle. I need to get another scope, that one got moved to a GSR.

One day I will find one of these...

well, it looks like I am going to go with the following, for both rifles.   ill be buying the mount and scope this payday,  ( to mount on the 44 mag rifle ) so I will have time to get it set up, and do some shooting before deer season in November.  I will be buying a scope and mount for my womans at-15 for deer season as well, so I will be waiting on the 45/70 optic and mount till December or January.   I REALLY need optics right now. optic purchases will likely be as follows.

1..October... marlin 44 mag, scope mount and leupold vxII 1x4 scope.
2. November.. ar-15 scope mount, and either a burris mtac, vortex strike eagle or something similar. 1x6 scope.
3. December...marlin 45/70 scope mount and leupold vxII 1x4 optic.
4. January...... Remington model 7, .308... leupold 3x9x40 vxII scope.
5. feburary...... another strike eagle / mtac 1x6 optic, for another at rifle.

this scope mount... ( game reaper mount )

and likely this leupold scope.  leupold vxII 1x4  the scope is not super expensive, but a leupold at $274.00 from my experience is a pretty decent scope.  I cant wait ! !  obviously I will need a leather sling for this rifle as well.

really love the scope, I'm planning to buy another one for my 45/70, and possibly a third for my ar as well.

Due to this thread and my failing eyes I bought one of the Game Reaper mounts for my 1894 as well, it came in today and I mounted it and it looks good. I had a Nikon Monarch 3 2-8X32 that wasn't being used so it went on this gun. I really hated to take the Skinner sight off but it's just not working for me any more.
