Any SD load recommendations for a lever gun chambered in 357/38?
Link Posted: 1/28/2016 11:38:36 AM EDT

158grn Zero JSP bullet, CCI 550 (SPM) primer, 16.7grns H110 powder, Starline brass.  Assemble ingredients carefully at an OAL of 1.560".  Fire to familiarize with your rifle.  Reload and start again.

Defense against what threat????

If you're talking SD against two-legged critters, any 357 JHP load is going to develop crazy velocities/energy.

Something Buffalo Bore if you want to go overboard (in a good way).

Buffalo Bore:

Make special note of the Marlin 1894, 18.5 inch barrel velocities. Item 19C/20, supercedes 30-30 energies!!!

18.5 inch Marlin 1894

a. Item 19A/20-180gr. Hard Cast = 1851 fps
b. Item 19B/20-170gr. JHC = 1860 fps
c. Item 19C/20-158gr. Jacketed Hollow Point = 2153 fps---- Can you believe this?!!!
d. Item 19D/20-125gr. Jacketed Hollow Point = 2298 fps---- Or this?!!!

This, as long as you use projectiles that can tolerate the higher velocities. Even my little 16" pushes 125's over 2,000fps, with silly-low recoil.

Some examples:
AE 158 JSP from a carbine
LEVERevolution from carbine
Underwood 158 XTP, carbine & revolver

On the other end - if someone small or a non-shooter needs to use it - even .38 specials can be surprisingly capable from a carbine. 158-grain .38's at 1000-1050 fps give recoil that feels almost like a .22, while putting out more muzzle energy than a .45acp hardball load.

My carbine has 158gr jsp in it.

But. I ran a few mags of Underwood 158 gr lhpswc in 38 sp +p and the were supersonic and had very little recoil.

I use that load in my snub and would have no issues with it.

The cool thing with 357 carbines is it turns cheap jsp ammo into something that actually works

I'm having a hard time finding any gel testing.

I would think the possibility of over penetration with .357 SD ammo might exist from a carbine. If I were going to use one for home defense I would just find a +P .38 Special load that feeds reliably.

How well do you think this would do? I'm stacked deep in it as I have a 73.

Those links in my post above are gel tests with .357 carbines.

The AE looks real good.

Shitty   I use similar loads on small game.  Low powered pistol rounds IE cowboy action,  won't gain slot of speed from a rifle barrel.

Find a cheap box of 357 sp. It'll work.

Hardest part is mounting a light.  Right now I'm using black electric tape.  I'm thinking of a mount using kydex but I need to buy a sheet.

I use Hornady 158 grain XTP hollowpoints in 38 Special for my lever rifle. I live in a neighborhood with houses all around me, so 357 Magnum is not a consideration due to overpenetration concerns.

I suspect a hot 125gr 357 JHP might under-penetrate,  disintegrate on target . . . .almost like a varmit bullet.

My 16" 92 with 22grs of H-110 powder runs about 2250fps.

I'd go with a 140 to 158 grain .357 JHP that feed reliably in your rifle. I recently picked up some Fiocchi .357 grain JHPs from Midway that feed smoothly in my Rossi 92. I think (but I'm not positive) that they are loaded with Hornady XTPs.

I agree with Derek45 that the lighter 110s to 125s run the risk of being driven past their design envelope, and behaving like varmint bullets when shot from a rifle.

125 gr hollow point. The damage is devastating to the human body, and if you hit solid it will take it down.

158 JSP American Eagle

Underwood 158 gr Gold Dot (carbine starts at 2:00)

Corbon 125 gr DPX (carbine starts at 2:00)

Remington 180 gr SJHP

Having looked at these gel test videos I like the 158 best for home defense.  180 is a bit too much penetration, 125 yaws off line.  I want a bullet to drill straight where I aimed it.

158 SP American Eagle is like a laser in my Marlin and the video shows what it is

in a handgun maybe

.....but my 16" levergun they are going 2241 fps

I suspect they will disintegrate on impact like a varmit load

Don't suspect....they do. You are correct on all counts.

Few years back at a Deer Youth Weekend Hunt we had a young lady shoot one with a 357 lever gun. Her and her dad both swear she made a good hit - crappy blood trail and never found the deer. I asked them what load they were using; yep 125JHP's said the gun store clerk recommended them. I'm really getting the point I'd like to see Marshall and Sanow burn in hell.

I would say not well.

Instead, find a heavy bonded JHP like a 158 grain Speer Gold Dot. The bonded core in the Gold Dot will expand very rapidly with the velocity from a lever gun, but will also hold up better from the drastically increased stress on the projectile.

If you use a non-bonded projectile, the fragmentation will be... tragically exaggerated.
