Next time think about buying one without such frummery.

Unfortunately, I have no helpful ideas.

Depending on how new it is, I would try to return it.

Maybe some preservative grease is gumming something up in the internals? I worked on an old Marlin lever action that due to cleaner that was older than me and well varnished being present would do all kinds of craziness. Take off the wood and hose her down with cleaner a few times, I did that and it fixed it

My new 1894 (bought it earlier this summer) had action issues: difficult to operate, often wouldn't close due to binding, and would jam (lifter would bind up).  I had to send it back.  To Marlin's credit they fixed it quickly and paid for shipping both ways.
