I've been newly bitten by the lever action bug and am in negotiations for this old gal.  The owner says he believes it is late 80's production.  He wants $425 for the rifle plus "3 boxes 150gr remington bullets."

Deal or no deal?

Theres a marlin collecters forum.  Much info to be had there. Simple google search. Its a good site for all things marlin.

Unfortunately, I can't get my hands on it to inspect or read the serial number yet.

Ouch!  $425.  Negotiable?  That one pictured has upgraded wood.  Looks nice.  I'd have to be real hard over on having one to pay $425.

Agree..^^^ At $425, he knows what he's got.  That is a little high but the original Marlins aren't being made anymore and the ones out there are just going to go up in price.  I lucked up and got one a while back for $200.  I'm sure I will never find another one at that price.  If you REALLY want it, you might not want to pass it up if its in good shape.  That is nice wood...!!

what are you giving for 3 boxes of 30-30, remingtons. factor that in.puts it under 400.00 somewhere. Has the bullseye, and its not got a hole in it for a sling swivel like you see sometimes.  Wonder if  GB has anything comparable.

Thanks for the info guys!  I think you're all echoing what I should be thinking about here.  I like it, I'll see if I can talk him down.

Any thoughts on a piece like this for a young boy's first deer gun?  I've never shot a .30-30 but I hear they're more forgiving, might try this out on my 11 year old-the ol .270 might be a bit much.

Honestly, that isn't a bad price on a clean JM marked gun. I've seen several similar guns recently and all were around the $450 range. They didn't have ammo though. Really, you're actually only paying around $380 for the gun if you consider the ammo.

The wood is nice, but nothing out of the ordinary for Marlins from that era. Is it a .30-30 or .35 Rem? You didn't specify.

I'm with other folks suggesting a browse through GB and Armslist for average prices. They aren't making them anymore and prices are bound to rise.

ETA: you posted .30-30 right before I sent my post.

The 30-30 is great for a boys first deer rifle, I got one for my birthday when I was 10 or 11.

Hope you gents didn't think I'd leave you hanging.  I pulled the trigger on this deal for $400, including 3 boxes of ancient remington 150grs.  Serial number starts with 24.  The previous owner stated to me after the deal that he had never actually shot it, so the first thing I did was run up into the hills to eviscerate a Lacroix can.  Check out that bolt!

Mushed Akubra Adventurer for scale.

Nice rifle and a very good deal.

nice score. IMO with prices these days I'd pay $425 without blinking for a gun like you got.

Great rifle, they are very popular in PA for deer and bear. I have the same gun in 35 Remington and I love it.

Is that a 336C or a 336CS?  I had a 336CS that I bought in the 80's from K-Mart for $179 and foolishly sold about 10 years later.  Would love to have it back.

You got a nice lever gun for a good price...!

Congrats, that is astounding!!!

But did you get, or give, the ammo?  I'm confused on that part.

I paid $200 for that rifle a month ago.  Very minor surface rust, but it is a shooter and a good truck gun.

Well, the Marlin is gone. I traded it off today for a Winchester 94 in .30-30.
