So like the title says my dad wants a scope for his marlin 336 for christmas.  Looking for suggestions on a scope under $200 but I also know he probably needs some sort of base to mount to and of course rings.  3-9 is all he will need.

Any help will be appreciated

Here is what Im looking at so far

Go with a RED DOT a good quality one in the SCOUT position for fast target acquisition!

I have a Leupold Gilmore red dot on mine with an AO SCOUT mount." />

3X9 is too powerful of a scope for what the .336 is usually chambered in. Better to get a red dot or a low 1 to 3 powered scope for a 336.

I've missed more deer because of too high of a powered scope than if I had a fixed low powered scope

I use 2-7 x32 scopes on mine. I use Talley extra low rings they look good and are low enough the scope barely clears the hammer.

I like a 1-4 or a 2-7 works great on a lever gun

OP- I just took a 3-9 off a 336. IM me your address and the scope and rings are yours.
Merry Christmas to you and your dad.

Edit- It's a Simmons with Weaver rings.

Listen to someone that has and enjoys a scope on his 336. I do and I love it. I have a Leopold rifleman 3x9 on Leo rings.
Do it!

I like the leupold 2X7 rifleman . A bit more compact , makes it easier to mount low which is a great benefit for the lever gun and the way the stock is shaped.

Another question for the OP . Does pops really need/ want a scope ? I am older and the ship has sailed for my eyes and the long gone ability to shoot well with standard lever gun iron sights . Most all my lever guns have a rear peep sight and that works well for me . I prefer the Lyman for its fine , easy adjustments . Use it with aperture for fine work and unscrew the aperture and use just the screw hole as a ghost ring type for hunting use in low light.

Under no circumstances consider those common but horrible "See thru" mounts which are too high to be of any use . Cute theory that doesn't work

I have had the same 3x9 on my .30-06 for almost 35 years and it's rarely set anywhere above 6x.  I generally keep it about 5x and turn it down to 3x if I'm hunting in the timber. I good fixed 4x would be light, simple about perfect for a .30-30. Imho.

I have this exact set up and love it.

If I were to re-scope it, 3x9 tops, I'd mount this on it, or a redfield revolution.

I prefer lower powered scopes on my leverguns.  I also like receiver sights and have Williams 5D, FP and Lyman on a few of my rifles.  I don't care for the see thru type rings either but my Dad had a steel tube 4x El Paso weaver mounted on his 1953 Marlin 336SC (5th rifle from left in pic below - now with Williams 5D) with a set of them from about 1963 until 2003 (when I inherited it) and he shot a lot of deer using that set up  I suspect that he wasn't the only one that had see thru rings.

I don't particularly like them but try them for yourself, they may work for you, they sure did for my Dad.

I have friends who have 3-9x40 scopes mounted on .30-30s, while not my preference, it works for them; that is all that matters.
That Bushnell Banner may work for you but for the money, a Bushnell Trophy or 3200 is a much better scope and still under $200.

Very impressive collection sir! The wood on the fourth from the left is particularly fetching. I'd personally be a bit nervous about leaning them all against the fence like that. From having personally watched one of my rifles slide off a barbed wire fence before, It's a painful experience.

OP, look for a Vortex Viper 2-7 if anyone still has them new. They're about the best deal in a quality optic that I'm aware of. Might be some used one's floating about as well. I bought mine new for $149 on close-out from SWFA and I'd put it up against scopes costing 2x that.

If you can't find a Vortex Viper, check out the Nikon Monarch 2-8. That's some real nice glass for the money. It seems like they were $199 a couple years back. Probably a few bucks more today, but worth it IMHO.

Also, Natchez has tons of deeply discounted discontinued scopes for sale. Especially the Burris scopes. One of those may fit your budget.

Thanks! That one is a .30-30 Winchester Model 94 Classic with 20" octagonal barrel and a Lyman 66A receiver sight. The buttstock is figured walnut with a tiger stripe but the forearm has next to no figure, is quite a bit darker and doesn't match very well. Still a nice rifle though, I traded for it a little over 20 years ago, it is a good shooter.

Yes.  That is a 150 yard, 200 pushing it, rifle.  A 2-7x would be as high as I would go.  I hunted for decades with a .30-30 336 first with a Weaver K4 then a 2-7x.  Only reason I went with the variable was to be able to turn the magnification DOWN to 2x for hunting in thick cover and at running game where this rifle is mozt effective. You are shooting flat nosed bullets at relatively low velocity with a rainbow trajectory.  Amazingly effective on deer within its range, very quick handling, but high magnification is a handicap.

If you're looking in the $200 neighborhood I think that the Nikon Prostaff series scopes are the best glass for your money. Also have heard good things about Redfield.

DNZ (http://www.dnzproducts.com) makes great 1 piece mounts so you don't have to worry about buying bases, rings, etc.

Agree. Got both on 2 336's. Plus another with Leupold Scout Scope. All work great. For years I resisted putting optics on my lever guns going with Williams Fire Sights and rear peep apertures. But for hunting you can't beat the scopes listed.

Same on mine.  I mounted it with Warne QD Low rings on an EGW picatinny rail.  It sits close to the receiver and I can quickly pop it off to use the irons.  I really think a 1-3 or 1-4 is perfect for almost all lever gun applications.
