I recently purchased a used Marlin 336CS and was debating putting a low powered scope on it.  I have a Rossi R92 .357 that I enjoy shooting open sights so I figured with the more powerful .30-30 I would like to shoot it further more accurately.  What are the pros and cons?  And what setup (scope, mount, and rings) are you guys using?
Thanks

I have an Express Sight Systems Scout mount on mine, and a Leupold Gilmore red dot. I've just bought another 336 in the same .35 Remington round for the wife and will eventually do the same to that one too.

I actually liked this setup better than any others I have seen:

That old Weaver scope is clear, does not obscure anything downrange, the magnification is right for the rifle and cartridge, and it can be mounted very low and forward of the hammer. These scopes are not expensive, either.
If I was scoping a Marlin, this is the way I would go.

The rifle looks like this, now, with the wood reshaped, but I really liked that scope setup, if I were to scope a 336.

Here is a .45-70 with a more modern mount and scope - a Leupold  scope, base, and rings. It works fine, but I prefer the older, lighter, slimmer, and more forward-mounted scope in my previous post.

I do like that forward mounted scope.  Not sure how I could mount something like that.  I just have the drilled and tapped holes in the receiver.
That 45-70 looks mean!  I like the all black look and the barrel porting.  My 336 has the synthetic furniture and is all black as well.  I wouldn't mind buying a new set of wood furniture for it some day but for now I like the look.

I have a Leupold base one piece and Rifleman rings on mine with a Vortex 2-7. Despite the economy price, mine have performed very well and haven't moved a bit. If you go this route, make sure your scope will fit. This is about the lowest possible mount and the reason I choose it. Nothing above a 33mm objective or you're removing the rear sight.

Another option is Talley one piece rings. I had a set and they're top notch. These are the lowest mount. The extra low model was too low to mount a 32/33mm objective scope without removing the rear sight, but would fit fine if you aren't concerned about the rear sight.

ETA: make sure you try out a scout type mount before committing. I tried one and could never get the feel for it. Ended up hating it. Some guys swear by them though.

ETA: these are the Talley rings I mentioned. They sell Med, Low and Ex low in a couple of finishes and 1" or 30mm. I'd say these are the best rings available for the Marlin JMHO.

I use a 2-7 power Redfield with some low Leupold 1" Rifleman Vertical Split Rings , that scope feels like it belongs on rifle.  The scope has a 33mm objective and it just barely clears the rear sight by 1/16" but it's just perfect for my cheek weld.  I don't have a very good picture of the setup but i'll post what i have.

not mine, but similar set up. Got the lever from my pops, so not positive on mounts. Pretty sure they're weaver rail/rings, and a 1x4 illum.

A low-power straight-tube scope is best; you lose nothing over a larger diameter objective if you buy good glass, and you can get it lower.
Low mounting is particularly important with lever guns; much of their vaunted "handiness" comes from being very well-balanced, and any scope detracts from that, so you want something small, light, and low.
I wanted to have both a very low scope and aperture sights. I took a Leupold Rifleman mount, filed the center groove deeper, and cut down the rear to accept a Skinner Lo-Pro aperture as the rear mounting screw. Front sight is an XS Sights white stripe; with the rear being essentially a fixed aperture, sighting-in is done with the front blade - set and forget.
Scope is a Weaver V-3 in Weaver Extra-Low rings.

I've looked, but it appears some folks are calling the wet weather jacket we are issues a "gortex parka"....which it aint.  I wish I could check them out in person before buying.  I'll continue to check out ebay.  Many thanks!

Shot this guy near dusk on the run. I like the variable power even though others might not. Also am a fan of the rifleman scopes...
Leupold Rings
Leuopld Rifleman 3x9
Last year I took 3 whitetail
1 black buck
1 axis
1 piggy
I love it and so do my buddies. They took 5 whitetail with it. One buddy wants the exact same setup.
