THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
Local shop had a sale on .38SPL which I picked up for a Marlin 1894. Now, looking back at it, I'm not sure it was a good purchase.

Ammo in question is Remington/UMC 130Gr. MC (==metal core, looks like an FMJ with a broad meplat) .38SPL. Code: L38S11

The meplat measures .15" in diameter, while the primer is definitely larger than that. Should I be concerned about a tube detonation?

No, not at all, the recoil is negligible.

Use it in a revolver if your worried about it and then reload the brass to your liking with a different bullet for it. I don't think you have to worry, but I am a firm believer of MURPHY's law so I would tread carefully. This remington round has been around a while and is good for plinking as for the primer and impact detonation. I am no expert at all. Heck I can't even post without mispelling all the time lol

I've been in the market for a Lever gun for a while. And was thinking about 38/357 over a .30-30 for example.
Which what is described, a Tube Detonation, is/has it been a problem in the past? Anyone have a source of one happening?

Never crossed my mine that I would want certain ammo with certain tips to prevent a primer strike.

And the logic is the recoil would make enough force on one bullet to strike the primer on the one in front of it, and detonating it? Is that the idea?

I have fired planty of fmj 38 & .357 w/out any issues. I'm loading up some JHP's to see how those feed.

With a 3030 I beleive reloaders at times have used .308 and other projectiles and they have no meplat just a point and under recoil this can cause a tube detonation, but I think in most cases it was when the wrong bullets were used like FMJ and the such. I am no expert and am sure someone with more years will chime in with more info as well.

if you are really worried you could shoot 1 round at a time hand feeding them into your rilfe without using the tube feed.

When I was growing up my father had a Rossi in .357 mag and it fired the RNFMJ ammo just fine. I wish he would never got rid of that little carbine because it was accurate, no recoil, and fun to shoot. I guess that I am getting bored with the semi-autos I need to get a lever carbine in a pistol caliber––.357, .45 Colt, and .32 WCF would be ideal.

Thanks for making my want list longer

There was a study done on that years ago with 30-30's. Tube never detonated, even when the cartridge went off(in the tube). Round needs to be confined(like in a chamber) to let pressure build up.

Relax. You'll be fine. Just don't drop it off a horse.

The 2nd Amendment is not about rights. It is about CAPABILITY. It is about ensuring the capability to respond to violence, and oppression. Not with 1 round, or 10, but with the full force of indignant violence deserved at a breach of our peace.

Thanks for the responses guys - it was much ado about nothing, to put it so eloquently.

Put 150 rounds through my new 1894CSS on Sunday. Worked just fine. A little dirty, but what UMC ammo isn't?
