How about a pair of custom big bore takedowns in .45-70 and .450 Marlin.

Big bore, check
Lever-operated, check
Single shot, check
Obscure / reloader's cartridge, check

Pretty traditional, too:

And, since you want to take it on horseback:

Some really nice looking rifles in here. This is mine, not the best photo but you get the idea. It tried the big loop but it just doesn't work for me but I might try Muleman's (IIRC that is the guy) who bends the straight levers a bit. Plan on adding a Skinner sight too. Then Boomer will be finished.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of the Martini-Henry rifles. It would be an odd combination to have that hanging from either my western saddle or my McClellan though....Which makes me like it even more

Drooooooooool...

How much does a takedown .45-70 run? Are they still around the $2k mark from Wild West? I've wanted one for many years but that price point just makes it out of reach.

Wow, I'd love to find a deal on a used one like that! I'm going to have to start saving so if I do run across one I can jump on it.

Winchester 71 customized by the late Harold Johnson of Coopers Landing. He machine the end cap/sight protecter/mag cap, hand carved the wood grip and converted it to .50 Alaskan (along with a bunch of other work).

Marlin STP 45/70 (with some mods)

Grizzly Custom (Marlin 336) .35 Rem- slickest action I have ever felt.

The factory sights wouldn't get enough elevation at 100 yds, so I put a williams receiver sight on the rear..
The front sight was then too short, so I put a Lyman model 17 Peep on the front.

with factory ammo I'm getting 1.5" 5 shot groups.
I've shot several with 3 shots touching.

The gun shoots real well.
