I hardwired an adapter for my Valentine 1 into my 2003 BMW 540i. It was easy. The moonroof motor is easily accessible through the panel right behind the universal garage door opener. The motor is switched power, so my Valentine 1 turns on with the ignition.
I also did a fuse tap to a switched circuit on my 1986 Chevy 3/4 ton and ran it up the A pillar. But, it doesn't have anyt upholstery or ceiling coverings to pull down. Go Youtube it and see how easy or hard it might be for your particular vehicle. |

A lot of cameras at this entry-level price point use the same guts, and that chipset (the NT96650) is pretty standard on most cameras under a hundred bucks. At that point, you have to ask if the extra money is worth it, since the performance will basically be the same. The lens (AR0330) is pretty standard as well. Here's a camera of the same wedge design that will likely be 99% similar in performance, at half the price (heck, you could upgrade to the capacitor version and still save $25). Same chipset and lens. There's some reviews on youtube with test footage if you look. http://www.amazon.com/Spy-Tec-A118-Dashboard-Camera/dp/B00KZ0GKVS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437593829&sr=8-1&keywords=A118+dash+cam The only downside that I can think of with a wedge is that it might be harder to get it adjusted just right, since it's not on a ball mount. The vertical angle can get adjusted just fine, but getting the horizontal angle just right might take some fiddling. On the other hand, it's probably the most low-profile design out there. |

Just ran my new G1W-CB for the first time today. It has the noisy button rattle that I'll eventually fix, but no other complaints so far. The video and audio are WAY better than the DVR-207 that I was running before. That one lost its mind after less than 2 years and thought it was 2012 every time it powered on. Since all of the video with the correct date was newer, it just kept overwriting the same two files over and over with a full SD card.

I am looking for a camera system that will have both forward and rear facing cameras. I want high quality video that includes looping, GPS and parking lot mode (I think thats what its called). I have no problem paying a few hundred dollars for a system, price is less of a concern over quality This will be going in a new Ram 1500 crew cab truck |

Good thread.
I eventually ended up with a G1W from Amazon after having a k6000, after having a $200 version of a true 1080p dvr (about 4 or so years ago, before this blew up as big as it is now) that died out on me. The G1W seems pretty good so far, I spot check it randomly to see how it records, works really well for the cost. 32gb class 10 card will record about a week and half of 1-2hr driving a day. |

I have been using a panorama S for almost a year after my FineVue cr500 internal battery died and it became unreliable.
I like the built in gps, its overall size and its simplicity. I let it record in 3 minutes increments so I don't have to edit them and can upload directly. I like the set and forget cameras but I do pull off videos if I see anything interesting. Here is a spin out I captured on video. Quality is acceptable considering it was a dark cloudy winter day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PhrvdUG4t4 The only option I would like is to have the camera directly upload to the cloud if you push a button or are in an accident/pulled over by the police. |

This is probably the wrong thread, but does anyone know of a camera that does both dashcam duty like the G1W that everybody likes, and a backup camera, that I, for example, could use to help hitch my truck to my trailer?
I know I can get a g1 w, and then probably direct wire one of those small backup cameras to my radio, but I would like to be able to record what goes on behind my truck, as well as see it, and all of the little license plate cams then I see just display video, and my deck is too primitive to do anything with recording or even output. I know I am probably seeking a unicorn, but it just seems kind of wasteful to buy to separate items with so similar of purpose. |

This one I put the 650 in one of our cars. The rear camera has now failed on the 550 I have in another car. Seems they can't take the Texas heat. I wouldn't have gotten the 650 if the 550 failure had already occurred. It seems to me right now that the best bet is to go with two single camera setups. |

In on the tail end of this.
Looking to get a dash cam and it seems the G1WC is the go-to for a less expensive camera for hot places? Or not? My vehicle's cigarette lighter socket is hot 24-7 so no issues with having to hardwire. Any other options you guys have experience with in this price range or even a bit above if it has features that would be worth the added cost? |

BTW, Massdrop has the Blackvue DR650GW 2-channel dash cam right now for about $290
That's about sixty bucks less than what I paid... and it includes a Power magic pro. Link ETA: and I just realized that Blackvue has implemented a new feature set for that model... Blackvue Cloud. Your dashcam has built-in wifi that you used to be able to use to get video off the camera. Now you can still do that, but they've also enabled a feature where it can connect to a wifi access point, and is remotely accessible. You get up to ten minutes of live viewing per day for free, 10GB of storage, and 100 downloads per-month through their web portal. This is something completely new, and I'm just now learning about it. Sweet! I've got to upgrade my firmware and play with this... |

I had a G1W in my Edge for the trip from TN to FL to VA over the summer, but I had an issue with the radio, of all things. I had purchased a harness to hard-wire the dash cam for power, as the power outlets in my Edge are live 24/7, and I was worried about draining the battery if I leave the cam plugged in all the time. I wired the power wire to switched power, and ran the ground to the chassis...specifically, a bolt that had another ground wire running to it. However, when I did this, I lost all reception for the FM radio.
Now, I do wiring (among other things) on the Apache for a living, so I am not entirely stupid on how 12v electricity works, but for the life of me I cannot figure out why grounding to the chassis is affecting radio reception. FWIW, I touched the ground to several different points on the chassis, with the same effect. |
