THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT make a nice vault. I'm 5'10" and can walk around inside comfortably. No windows, just 10" concrete walls. 
Received the Strudy Safe Vault Door early this week. It took 4 of us to get it in place and bolted down. Now time to start working on the inside. The only issue with the door is the panic button inside is bent so it won't push in. I'll call Sturdy next week to see if they can help me out. It's only a small piece of plate steel with a rod. 
Framed Out. 
Decided on T&G instead of sheet rock.

Somebody obviously didn't hear about the amazing gas power cutoff saw you can buy for less than $1000 that will cut through 12" thick concrete walls in less than a minute...
Ok, maybe there is a little sarcasm in that... wonder what ever happened to that guy??? But really, a cut-off saw would have made that look a lot cleaner. Rent a big fan with duct on it to vent the exhaust outside and go to town, then leave the house for a while to let the remaining fumes air out... seems pretty easy to me... |

You will never see that mess when the vault door is installed. The flange covers alla 'dat up...
However, make sure you buy a door that can accomodate concrete that thick. Congrats! |

Yeah even drilling large holes with a hammer drill takes a long time |

It would take much longer to go through the concrete wall than it would most of the lightweight "vault doors" installed on these types of rooms. A concrete saw may not get you a quick hole through the concrete, but it would probably slice up one of these doors in fairly short order

The other houses in the area that are split entry are poured the same as my basement minus the vault. It looks like they
needed more foundation due to the footprint of this house being larger so they dug it out and poured two more walls. If that's the case it's the best mistake I've ever seen. |

Does your door only have two hinges? I am only asking because I just got a sturdy door about six months ago & it has three hinges. I wonder why the difference. Is your door shorter than normal maybe?

It does only have 2 hinges because it's a custom build to 69" tall. The room is a foot higher than the rest of the basement. I haven't hit my mellon yet but it will happen eventually. |
