THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I'm finally in the market for a "real" safe and would appreciate any last-minute advice. Trust me, I'm treading lightly given this is a tech forum and after reading I know there are some strong opinions out there!

I'm leaning towards AMSEC because I have a local dealer that can deliver and I'm too old/unwilling to to deal w/ moving a real safe and the hassles/weight involved.
Basically, I have a pre-built bookshelf area we opted out of that's right next to the main structural support in our '99 home w/ pre-engineered beams so weight distro and lbs/ft or lbs/in won't be an issue. Anyhow, this 38" x >100" space has been begging for a gun safe for years that will be part of the "family room."

The safe should be Hunter Green IAW CINCWIFE direction but she's totally supportive of having a real safe in her living area!

Anyhow, I'm guessing between AMSEC and Sturdy, there aren't too many "bad" options but wanted to check in w/ the experts!

VR,
B2

FWIW, this is what I spec'ed before going to the local dealer:

I got an AMSEC TF6036

-My only regret is that I didnt have enough money for SF model.
-I was deciding between similar AMSEC, Liberty, and Cannon safes
-The door organizer is what sold me on the AMSEC.
-There really is no need for the AR gun rack unless you got an A2 upper with glass mounted on the carry handle. I got optics on some flattop A3's, 16in carbines. They fit just fine (you might need the rack if you got SBR'd AR's, or you can just lower the current rack or just make a platform to raise the height at which they sit)
-Black Safe/Nickel Hardware (the color will never get outdated)

You used to be able to get the Amsec safes with flat paint and no interior to save some big cash. Building your own interior is easy, and you can set it up the way you want.

I'm with your wife. The appearance of a safe has much to do with your ultimate satisfaction with it.

I'm with you, too. Getting a local dealer that will deliver and help you when you need help is important.

I've shopped for safes twice in my life. Both times, I compared every possible specification and came to the same conclusion both times. Fort Knox is the best value in home gunsafes.

Is there a Fort Knox dealer in your area? If not, go with the AMSEC. If there is a Fort Knox dealer available to you, at least give them a chance to help you.

Thanks and pretty sure there aren't too many bad options in the semi-real safe RSC arena.

Yep, "appearance" in a CO/Western-way is important for what will become a permanent and visible fixture in the above ground furnishings in addition to an existing man-land container I have outgrown.

It's that EBRD you folks have inflicted upon me... It's ALL YOUR fault!

after a long search I ordered a BF amsec. It should be here in a day or two. It was that or a sturdy safe.

since I'm building it into a wall I liked the idea of the really thick 1/2" steel door. The composite lining was also very close to commercial safes that I have seen.

UPDATE: Hunter Green BF 6636 per CINCWIFE specs on the way!

I'll update as I go through this process but pretty pumped to be getting at least a "near-real" security container.

B2

Probably won't make a1abdj happy, but I ordered through The Safe Place (http://www.thesafeplace.com/).

I had good intentions of supporting our locals, but after attempting to talk to 3 local AMSEC dealers (one's gone, one's kind of iffy, one out of control), I'll happily report my total price delivered is <$3.5K vs $5.4K ("on-sale") for basically ordering the same way they would have (and that's delivered to my garage). I don't have time to chase all over the state, and yep, I'm also having it professionally moved/installed for WAY less than that $1.9K differential and still don't think the local's brochure and catalogs were worth quite that much...

(All kidding aside, a1abdj is a "real" safe dealer and offers pretty competitive prices on multiple models of better gun RSCs/safes... I don't know that he's revealed who he's with here but research isn't too hard. )

I'll happily call a local pro/pay the pro rate in the unlikely event I ever have a problem but it likely won't be those particular locksmiths/dealers I tried to support.

OK, Let's hope this doesn't turn into a "nightmare" thread but I somehow suspect I'm in good hands... More to follow.

AMSEC BF6636 delivered this afternoon... Sadly, will have to wait a couple of days for install.

EXTREMELY IMPRESSED!

B2

Observations (beyond the endless AMSEC/Sturdy/Liberty/other debate... They're all good in this class and way more than I've had to this point):

- Approx 6 weeks for a factory custom
- WAY better RSC than anything I had available locally; assume "wait time" is about the same anywhere
- Fit/Finish is as expected from AMSEC/better than most
- Multi-option factory interior, along w/ AR rack should be perfect (I can EASILY side-by side less used vs. more used on R vs. L side... LOTS of options and no cabinet making required)
- 36" W provides many more options vs. 28-32" I looked at (Still wish I had a bigger house or two of these)
- No way in hell will I, son and beer drinking buds tackle moving this thing! (Seriously I know I could, but think this just crosses the boundary of manageable w/ your average HD rental dolly; not to mention it's heavy enough to be dangerous. Reminds me of changing combine tires, but I didn't have to take them through a doorway, nor uphill...)
- CINCWIFE blown away by beautiful HG color/looking forward to having in living area (That's worth the wait alone... )
- The Safe Place/Callos family in Reno were awesome to deal with and take personal interest ensuring everything is just right... This got factory pallet shipped, they QC'ed and then double-wrapped it in some additional layers and it's perfect.

OK, I'll be happy after the heavy duty movers are done but I have no doubt this will be one of my better life purchases. After the week+ we've been through in CO, not to mention normal times, this fine piece of equipment will just help add to my peace of mind!.

ETA: a1abdj - No kidding, thanks for a lot of advice... I decided on AMSEC partially because of your thoughts here and elsewhere, but it was also personal and the BF6636 "fit" my needs perfectly. FWIW, we obviously don't have folks like you or The Safe Place locally/I couldn't drive all over CO.

Anyhow, it's always fun to read some competing opinions/controversy but it's always invaluable to know there's some fact-based knowledge as well!

Still don't know if you've "outed" your company on ARFCOM but anybody shopping for an RSC or anything real safe-related might want to send him an e-mail or IM as well.

I have a 6040W. It was their cheaper big plain safe. The fit and finish was great and I was really happy with it.

In the future I will probably get the electronic lock and buy two smaller safes vs one big one. That way I can keep the stuff I dont use all the time in the back.

Very happy w/ the end-product; hope I never get to post results against burglars or fire. Mucho relieved to have this in place after many years of deciding.

Sorry guys, my camera is currently dealing w/ a grandson and I suck at photos to start with.

Anyhow, imagine these pics w/ black nickel shoved into a bookcase nook/fully bolted in our main living area and you'll have an idea. No short, nor half-wide shelves and much taller stuff involved/CINCWIFE is pleased.

(That door storage is an AWESOME upgrade/now standard for AMSEC BF series and seriously helps save space for an AR w/ a light or whatever attached along w/ pistol/misc storage.)

Naturally, this RSC is already magically full –– AR rack worth it to me as scoped ARs are space hogs but I also have some "Fudd guns" that are way longer/needed to sort.

I will reiterate moving a RSC / hunk of metal this size is best left to pros w/ the right equipment! Far from huge, but I'm thinking 4 buds and beer are a bad idea once you get much heavier than 800#. I had two guys w/ a stair-walking dolly and ramps; they chose stairs but it was a bitch...

B2

For Archive purposes: Here are are the Colorado Springs Region "safe" movers that are recommended:

Jim @ 719-205-5585 (Associated w/ CO State Safe & Lock) –– He and Buck ended up moving it; been doing it for 20+-years/recommended by "Heavy Duty". Truly capable, fully bolted down and some true characters (in a great way). Seriously, they made short-order moving this semi-beast and are good guys.

Brian @ 719-390-3894 (Heavy Duty Move CO) –– I found via archive; he was overloaded but highly recommended by Big-R/ many others, got hurt but moves a lot of safes here... He referred me to CO Safe & Lock

I'm likely a "moran" of first order, but trying to find anything other than a typical move company was a bit frustrating...

I've never met either in person, but have spoken with both of them on the phone. I had Jim remove a vault door for me last year from a former bank in CO Springs.

There aren't many people out that way in this business.

Thanks for chiming in/sorry for not price-checking w/ you... I won't "out" you.

By all accounts, both CO SPGS region "heavy" movers I posted are reputable, capable and good folks.

Best wishes!

Good choice on the safe.
