I ordered one of the 551 pistols from JDI Firearms this week.  It should arrive sometime next week:

Here's a picture of one of them from JDI's facebook:

I think they only imported 50 of them.  When I talked to Dave and ordered mine, he said that they still had a few for sale.  I have a 553P and love it, so I'm excited to get this one and SBR it.

I wanted one with the steel lower, but they said that SAN has been trying to move away from the steel lowers.  It sounded like it also takes SAN a while to build any decent quantity of rifles, as I think they laid off a bunch of employees a year or so ago.

OH Dear. I have never heard of, nor seen one of those. OP has awakened a part of me that I want to keep suppressed. That is a a Beautiful Pistol. That will be a Beautiful SBR. I want to have one, and would convert one right now.

OP has put me in a conundrum because I have the funds to do the deed, yet that would be a Misuse of the funds, that money is designated to pay off three cars, a second mortgage and kill a credit card. But, after I do those deeds, I ,Damnit OP, Now i'm crunching numbers.

I hope OP loves his Pistol and posts a AAR.

551 owner here.  The barrel and flash hider are one piece design.  Built like a Swiss watch.  Think ball bearing on glass table smoothness.

Nice!

I've yet to shoot a 551 or 552/553, but the 550s are really nice rifles.
I'm a yuge fan, working on owning the whole family... 0/4 so far . $23K in rifles, if including the 550 Sniper.

The big layoff was back in 2014, it was pretty big news in Switzerland. After the layoff, they had less than 20 employees remaining. Link to article (in German)
I was talking to a Swiss guy here in Calgary who has connections with SAN, and according to him the company is doing much better now! He said they're working on fufilling LE contracts, and will be expanding ASAP.

ETA: There's a Canadian company, GSdesigns, which makes a mag-adapter which is nice, because up here the 30 rounders (pinned to 5, of course) cost over 100CAD and aren't easy to find.

I have a 553 sbr that I have shot the crap out of. It's my favorite firearm.

It's all I can do not to buy one of these and put an extension on the bbl and have a non nfa favorite.

Glad to hear SAN is doing well financially   It would be a shame to loose these little works of art.

Also hope they don't stop making steel lowers. They are part of the sex appeal.

I love my 551!
Strange that the retainer for the folding stock is absent from the hand guard in that pic. I hope it's present when you receive your pistol!

Probably a stupid import requirement to have it removed.

Can you easily add a top rail to the receiver for optics?   I didn't see a picatinny rail, but can't see from the pics if it is already tapped for screws.

SAN, I think B&T and a few others make a snap on rail that has a clamp that hooks over the little trapezoidal flange at the front of the receiver with a peg at the rear that slots into the hole in the rear sight base to hold it on.

Yes thats exactly how it works on the diopter 55x models from SAN. B&T makes them as well as some aftermarket sources (probably China). You tighten it down with a small wrench and it is a metric size so make sure you use the correct size. I've seen a lot of these rounded off...

I hope not, or else I'll be buying a set of handguards to go along with the stock I'm going to buy once I file my form one and it clears.

My 553 pistol (now SBR) came with the stock retainer on the handguard.

Care to share some pictures of the gun?  I just ordered mine earlier this week and paid via check, so it won't ship out until my check clears (hopefully tomorrow or Monday).

I thought about doing these ad an SBR project, but my full size 551-A1 doesn't impress me enough.

For $3k, I want to get on that B&T boat.  Got a bunch of stuff for sale to fund it.

@Stefan-DSO

Does SAN produce their version of the optics rail in-house, or does B&T produce it for them?

That's because your 551-A1 isn't SAN.

It's amazing how expensive the stuff has become up here. Thanks shitty Canadian dollar!

30 round mags were being sold for $65CAD back in 2008, currently if one can find them, they're almost $150CAD.

I paid $2,500 for my 551-2 SWAT. It's the last 5.56mm I'd part with.

As I side note, I noticed on JDI's Facebook page, they shared pictures of custom built 553 pistols that they are now offering, available in gray or black, different barrel lengths, and steel or aluminum lowers.

The first two guns this were custom built were pictured, and they looked really sweet.

When I go to their FB page I see none of this, just old photos. Can you share a link?

The SAN SIG pictured in your first post has aluminum lowers. In your last post above ^^^ they have steel lowers.

If you are buying the aluminum lower pistol, you can still get steel lowers but they are expensive, about $1,000 at www.cogunsales.com.

I have both type lowers for my 553P. The steel one will be for my SBR if I ever get my NFA approval.

Steel lowers are also available through JDI. I'm torn re: steel vs newer aluminum Swiss lowers. I have several Swiss 55x with steel lowers and I prefer them aesthetically. But the aluminum lowers seem to mate to the upper tighter than the steel. The aluminum lower is growing on me.

I ordered a steel lower to go along with my 551-P from JDI.

While I'm waiting for my form 1 to clear, I've currently installed it on my 553 SBR and installed my folding stock on it.

In my experience the steel lower mates to both to my 553 and 551 tighter than the aluminum ones that came with both.

I really like the aluminium lower that came on my 553 (now SBR). It mates tight but then the gun is only a few years old now. I prefer the steel on green furniture guns. The one on my 551LB (Thanks again Josh) looks great but it does rattle a little.

I have owned a total of 6 Swiss SIG 551s, a 552, two 553s, and 4 or 5 complete 551 and 552 parts kits. And I've had another 3 or 4 steel lowers in my hands and mated them to Swiss uppers. I've swapped different lowers around on different uppers. Every single steel lower demonstrated some wobble/play on every upper. The two Swiss aluminum lowers from 553s mated tighter.

But my 551-A1 factory SBR is truly a MAGNIFICENT firearm.
