I ordered one of the new, semi steel lowers last week. It should be here this week.

Not on my particular example. I wouldn't want to say it's typical. Only movement is front to rear. Should be able to shim it out.

Pretty sure they are different sizes. See if you can find a post by JARCslights (or a similar handle), as he did a 556P to 551 conversion.

For some unknown reason the US weapons have a longer barrel, which resulted in a longer space between the receiver and the gas block. The US stuff only takes US sized handguards, and the only way to get 552 / 553 handguards on your clone is to fabricate them yourself. This is my old thread here: 553 Clone Money Pit |

When installing a set of Swiss SIG 551 handguards on a SIG 556 or 522 the front end that fits into the gas block is a little smaller than the opening in the gas block. The front end of the handguards will have too much play in them. This can be easily fixed by cutting a black zip tie to length and tucking it in between the handguard and the gas block. The picture show is on my 522 but I have done this with my 556 as well. once installed the zip tie tends to stay in place fairly well when the handguards are removed and replaced. I used a small screwdriver to tuck the zip tie in working my way around from one end to the other.
