Anyone know where I would find a 551A1? What should I expect to pay for one if I find it? I see a few on gunbroker but those look like inflated prices $1200-2000..
Not looking for a safe queen or new in box just thought I would like one to play with.

$1200 doesn't sound like an inflated price to me.

They don't make them anymore, back stock is essential gone so your dealer probably won't be able to find one, and $1200 sounds like a pretty good price.

1200 is a good price.

Find an early production 551-A1. The newer models use fake stocks and handguards and the quality control is very poor.

For an out of production rifle that retailed for $1500-1700, I'd jump on it for $1200.

$1200 is a good price.  Forgot how much I spent on mine, but really love the gun!  It shoots whatever ammo and really looks the part.  For what it is, I love it.

I paid right around 1200 when I got mine and they were still in production.

I got my 551A1 a week before Sandyhook on a closeout deal from a local GS for $900 OTD...and it had the full assessory pkg with it. I love it. It has had zero issues.

It's a great rifle, and a lot of places were selling them for over 1200 even when they were still in production. Love mine.

Ugh.  This is why I don't bother with big stores.

About $1,200 is about right!  I can remember when the SIG 556-A1 first came out and I saw several FFL's offering their SIG 556-A1s for sale at $2,400 or more.

Cabala's Gun Library had a few.

Why did they stop making them when it seems this is the model most wanted in the first place?

We've been asking ourselves that since the original Sig 556 came out.

Everyone wanted the traditional Swiss Arms models, but what we got were all these lesser quality bastardized versions. They almost got it right with the 551A1.

I think it had to do with price point. They thought they could make more money selling $1200 Sig 556s than $3000 551s, and appeal to a wider range of buyers.

I think the biggest argument they were having was would the American market want a 55X that took an M4 mag or a SIG only mag.  They should have initially only offered the 551A1 in various configurations. From there they should have offered the 556 lower as an option.
People want stuff like this (as well as Styer AUGs that match the original, Galilis and etc). There is a pretty strong US  market for stuff like that.
