Got to hold a gen2 556R today and I have been looking at getting something different.
Then I started reading about the 556xi and how it will be multi caliber, modular barrel etc.

What do yall think?  Is the XI worth waiting ?
On the 556R- is the charging handle ambidextrous?
How about suppressing the 556R?  Worth it?

I got my Gen2 556R back in 2012, and absolutely love it. There have been reports of the XI's not running so hot. (XIR in the link)

I use my YHM 7.62TI QD and think it is worth it, however I drilled a smaller port on the opposite side of the gas valve to drop down the amount of gas in the system. Unfortunately the charging handle is not ambi.

Thats the same can I have.  Can you adjust the gas to better operate suppressed?

Not normally, the factory settings are "normal" and "adverse". I spun the gas valve around 180 degrees and drilled a new gas port for a suppressed setting. Here is an older thread about another forum member who was my inspiration.

I will be adding a can to my 556R shortly and will have to measure the gas plug ports and maybe add a third hole for suppressor use.

The 1st GEN 556R rifles had LOTS of problems. Mine never worked properly and after three trips back to SIG they replaced my 556R 1st Gen gun with a new 556R 2nd GEN gun.
Its sad to read the new XI is having similar cycling issues as the 1st Gen 556R rifles.

My 556xi Russian is giving me fits.  Short strokes, stovepipes, double feeds, etc...  Not to mention the accuracy is abysmal.  It is currently at Sig trying to get sorted out.

I wish I just bought the 556R....

When you get it back let us know what SIG found with your Gun, SIG told me they shot over 100 rounds and found nothing wrong with my 556XI-R !

I know something was wrong and SIG will not come forward and admit there is a problem. BTW my XI-R is flawless after getting it back from SIG so don't worry about that.

HDH.
