I'm thinking of tweaking a 556 Patrol with a Vltor CASV to look something like this...

Why not! Make it the way you want it! Your gun should reflect your desires. Enjoy!

Not that it matters but I kind of like making these one offs and have a history of internet gun forum 'firsts' over the years...

First swap from fishgills to Swiss hand guards on a 556 back when they were initially released.
First to swap out the fishgills to cut back 551 hand guards on a P556.
First to run the DDLES ring and cut back 550 hand guards on a P556?
First Adco cut/rethread/perm attach brake to 16.1" on a Sig 556 (I sent them the hardware to work on the 556's)
First 556 SBR to run the AGP Arms stock.
First 556R swapped to 556 classic green furniture.
First 556R to get the Adco cut back to 16.1" barrel oal.
First rifle length 556 series (and 556R) to run cut back 550 handguards.
First PWS Diablo pistol to get the side rail delete/ HK G36C hand guard mod.
First PWS MK114 to get the side rail delete/ HK G36K hand guard mod.
First PWS MK214 to get the side rail delete / HK G36 hand guard mod.
First Sig piston 516 pistol (first piston AR period?) to run a modified Vltor CASV.

The inbound 556 patrol will be my 10th 556 over the years and is one of the models I've never owned. Looking forward to customizing it.

The CASV came in today and the upper should be back with the chopped barrel and perm attached PWS FSC556 (16" OAL) on it by Friday. I went with the notched EL model CASV to hopefully reduce trimming around the front sight. The sling loop on the gas block may get removed to make this work. I've never used them on my 556's so I guess it is no loss. Hopefully this project will be knocked out by Saturday afternoon.

The upper took twice as long to get done with the perm attach muzzle device job. So pics won't be ready til next week.

Please post some closer pictures of just your new project & also of your barrel work to it.

Also how do you like the Vltor CASVs? I was considering picking up one for a FAL short gas.

I love it. It looks very functional while adding a new personality to the rifle.

Did it take any modification to put the rail on the rifle? I have a full sized 556, so I won't be doing the conversion myself. But I would definitely consider it if I picked up a patrol.

I'll work on getting some more pics this weekend. Adco did the barrel chop and though they took twice as long this time, they are usually crazy quick on this kind of work. I like the CASVs because I've not a big rail guy so I like the smooth CASV as a replacement for railed hand guards.

Thanks. I agree that the Patrol model screams out for a shorter barrel. Way too much skinny barrel sticking out in factory trim.

Yes, you have to spend a couple of hours with a dremel modding, test fitting, modding, test fitting. Also, you have to cut the sling loop off of the gas block. Plus you need to cut a hole in the bottom of the CASV for the bayonet mount to extend through it.

Damn, I like the direction that is going!

...and we need to get a black GEN 2 Scorpion Grip on the gun when it is all done!
