I dig it

I've been mulling over painting my carbines in a rough textured desert.

Very nice. How did you do that particular pattern? Cloth? Sponge? Doesn't really look overly "stencil"-ish.
And what was your base Tavor, black, tan, or green?

I'll bet a Magpul it started life as an FDE.

Most times when I see someone post that they rattle canned their firearm I cringe just as I click it.  Pleasantly surprised.  Looks really damn good.

Safe bet, most of the cracks and creases look like a FDE base color.

Tavor was originally black , base coated with rustoleum sand , then a coupla passes of deep forest green
Sponged in a mix of earth brown and army green  and added a bit of sand again with sponge where it seemed a little too dark.
Then coated over entire job with  minwax helmsman  spar urethane  in a clear semi-gloss

Original tavor here

I clicked on this thread expecting to see some abomination... I was sorely mistaken.

Looks really good OP.

You got really great coverage, then.

I learned the hard way that it's easier to start with light base coat and go darker with later coats.

Lighter over darker always resulted in too many coats to cover, and my stuff had to get stripped to start over.

Yeah I'm really impressed. It's one of those that looks so good in pictures and seems pretty easy that I want to try it. Thankfully I'm aware of my talents when it comes to anything related to paint and it would be best for me not to touch a paint can.
