I have a 1-6x24 on my SGW SKS, and I am trying to figure out where to sight in at.  I am currently at 25 yards, and was considering going to 50 or 100, but for what I am going to be using it for (probably 150 yards max), what is the best range to sight in at?  Shooting 124gr Herters SP, and have some Hornady SSTs, and 1K of 8m3.

Here is my SKS painted in duracoat in what I call "Florida Tigerstripe "

I have a 4 power Chinese scope on mine that is 3.5 inches above the bore
I zero my SKS and AK -47 at 50 yards
This has the advantage that the bullet is never more than 2 inches above or below the line of sight all the way out to 200 yards
This allows you to put the cross hairs on the bullseye or animal or kneeling man and  make a hit with no hold over needed.

With your 25 yard zero, you will be 3 inches high at 50 yards, 7 inches high at 100 yards
With a 100 yard zero, you will be 2.3 inches low at 150 yards and 7.2 inches low at 200 yards

My SKS will shoot Uly ammo (same ammo as your Herters)  into 4 inches at 100 yards from a sand bag rest
I think a 50 yard zero is the most versatile zero point as I do not see taking a shot over 200 yards with 7.62 x 39

Start at 50 but verify at 100 or even 200.
This way you will know what the POI shift is at those ranges plus any minor error in your windage setting will be apparent.

with the advice of this site, I've been using 50 yards for all my ar style rifles and like it alot.  shoot 3 gun with it and have been very happy with hitting the target.

I sight in 5.56 at 36 yards and my scoped 308 at 100 yards.

For a 7.62x39 I might try 25 yards. How is it working for you?

Sight in your rifle at 200 meters. The arc of the 62gr is on the same plain at 200 that it is at 56.

Only have 125 yards at the current range.  I picked up another 60 rds. so I will get it sighted in at 50.

I sight mine in at 50, and routinely shoot out to ~300-350yds with it, as well as 'close in' for matches.
Note that 50yds isn't really dead on at 200yards, more like ~220yards or so, so with any zero, I'd consider which of the 'crossover points' (e.g. 50/200, 36/300, etc.) needs to be more accurate/is used more for you, then zero on that, and check on the other point.
In other words, if running a 50/~200 zero, and the majority of your shooting is at 200, then zero it to 200yards as final zero, and just shoot some at 50 and 100 to get a feel for your dope/impact at shorter distances.

With a 50/~220 zero, I aim 3" high at inside 25, dead on from 26-80yds or so, 2 inches low from 81-149, and dead on from 150 on.  Beyond 250, a few inches high.  In the worst case, as long as I'm shooting plates or center mass targets, dead on works just fine for hits.
One of these days, I'm probably going to move to the 36/300 zero..

I can't *stand* 25 yard zeros - for one, without a 'far crossover point check,' being off even slightly at that close zero distance can translate into being off quite a bit at range, especially if zeroing in without a solid rifle rest stopping any movement.  What seems 'good enough, rest must have been me' at 25yards, can be quite a ways off at 100 yards and out.

Question for everyone,

I put a bipod on the SKS, and got it sighted in at 50 yards. I then brought the target back to 25 yards, which is higher in elevation to the place I was shooting from compared to 50 yards, and the POI was the same.  Is this possible, or do I need to stop drinking coffee?
