Ordered mine, #63.  I think a Bullpup for the Savage 10 would be pretty awsome, although there is already a bullpup precision bolt rifle (DTA SRS) although its ungodly expensive.

FYI, I had the opportunity to put a lot of rounds through the Bullpup Unlimited stock at the show.  The pic above is the gun that was run all day, it has a 20" barrel and extended mag tube.  Here are my thoughts:

The execution of the design is nearly flawless.  Ergonomics are outstanding and it feels even better than it looks.  Although it adds a half pound to the weight of the stock 870, it feels much lighter and handier as the weight is closer to your body. The entire housing is made of a hard polymer, and looks to be and upper and lower that is bolted together and then a piece bolted on the front,  and it has a Remington gel pad as the buttstock.  It uses a standard AR grip and safety selector, and you can swap them out.  The funky trigger guard works very well, and does not rub the hand.  It will take any barrel length from 18.5" up and any mag tube length, so you could even throw a 26" barreled gun with a ridiculously long mag tube extension in it and still be shorter than a stock 870 with a 18.5" barrel.  I personally think the 20" barrel and mag extension looks "just right"

The trigger is OUTSTANDING and honestly felt better than the trigger on my stock 870 - I think that is in part to a slightly larger trigger that gives a bit more leverage.

Recoil is well managed and I was much faster and more accurate due to the excellent gel pad and the fact the stock is straight in line with no drop or comb - recoil goes straight into your shoulder and follow up shots are fast.  The gun was wearing Magpul BUIS, I would be more likely to use a optic that gave you a dot and circle for aiming.  I would also install a non-A2 grip.  I was told any AR safety will work, even Ambi ones, and I think the use of stock AR grip and safety is a great move as you can get the same grip and safety manual of arms as the AR-15.

The only odd thing is the slide release button, due to the design of the original gun, requires a slightly odd manual of arms to unlock.  Hold pump in offhand, use trigger hand to press.  I think with a little practice and experimentation this can be learned.  In an ideal world the slide release would be near the trigger hand, but I won't fault them for the location and the solution is still very, very good.  Loading is simply by rolling the gun on its side or upside down- I am admittedly slow at loading tube fed pumps, and I will admit my loading technique sucked, but once someone showed me what he said was the "Travis Haley way of doing it" my speed went up and it seemed to work pretty well.

The attention to detail is very good and even the little things have been thought of.  There are two sling points on the stock that will take HK hooks or MASH clilps, and the sling points are reversible from left side to right side(!)  I did not see it, but the tools to assemble and disassemble the stock are supposedly stored in underneath the buttpad.

All in all I would give it a 9.8/10 with the slide release being the only thing I could see minor improvement on.  I was so impressed when I got home from the shoot about 9pm I went on their website and ordered one for my Arkansas State Police $105 trade in that I picked up a few years ago.

I give it a big thumbs up.  Well done JJ!  It was a pleasure to meet you and get to try out your new 870 stock.  Not only was I very impressed with the ergonomics and the quality, I am really impressed with your price point.  These are a great value at $350.

For those that shot it, is the rear sight in the correct position? Is it similar to shooting an AR with the MBUS in place?

I had a chance to talk to the guy who makes them (JJ I believe) at some length - he is very professional and is very concientious about being able to ship a quality product on time.  As I understand it, the shells are already coming off the molds, they are just finishing up assembly and some testing at the moment.

yup, I am more apt to believe this is more real and coming soon and NOT vaporware....JJ told me all they were waiting for is a component and he was very keen on getting user feedback at the event.  I gave him my thoughts on it and believe my feedback efforts are well invested in this product.  I have always been a Mossberg fan, but this makes me want to go out and get an 870 just to fit this kit...That's how real (and good)  I believe it will be....

I'm #72, A and B.  I saw and heard enough on Saturday to say that JJ and his product doesn't even fit in the same conversation as the Kushnapup goons.  Explained to me that he's a retired LEO and has a very plausable explaination of getting held up by mis-information from the spring company.   He's got my money and confidence.  At least for a couple months when if I don't have my stocks I go looking for him by following the scent of Paul Mauls

I spent a lot of time with JJ this weekend (13 hours in a car each way), and he's the genuine article!  (BTW, we're not affiliated, just driving in the same direction, and both love Bullpup's.)

Juggernaut and he commiserated a bit on the trials and tribulations of manufacturing, and that you put your trust and faith in the suppliers, (and inevitably things get FUBAR'd.)

But the Rogue made it to market in a big way, and JJ's product is throrough, and I predict will be a mainstay in the market for a long while!

Hell, just look at his box, he's not cutting corners!!

I shot one of these at the bullpup shoot and didn't have a problem with the bolt release once I figured out how it worked.  It seemed easy to find with the weapon shouldered.  Yes, you do have to move your firing hand off the fire controls, but you have to do that for a slug changeover on the 870 anyway.

870 slug changeover:

  1. Depress bolt release with firing hand on fire controls.

  2. Slide action halfway back with support hand.

  3. Move firing hand from fire controls and push round back into magazine.

  4. Open action forcefully with support hand, ejecting the previously chambered round.

  5. Insert slug into chamber through ejection port in a manner of your choosing.

  6. Close action with support hand.

The bolt release on the 870 conversion is very close to where your hand needs to be to push that round back into the magazine, so you're not loosing anything in terms of economy of motion in my mind.

I think you guys talked me into a unit for Jenns 870.

But I have to pay for both car insurance first! Never freaking use it.....unlike the 870.

Maybe in a month or two I can order one.

If the company would come out with an Ithaca 37 or Stevens 350 conversion, Keltec would have real competition for a truly affordable ambidextrous bottom ejecting pump.

Yeah, I have my Discover about covered up on a 22LR. SBR upper that I am working on now. Once I get it finished and paid off I then can move on to the 870 conversion and then to the 9mm SBR upper build that I have in my mind. I told Discover to knock my limit down so I won't go full retard on buying gun parts.

Obviously he's focused on the 870 at the moment.  But I got him to open up a bit, and he does want to expand the line (after the 870 is successful - important hitch )

JJ is a real gun guy.  He started talking about his collection, and I started to get pissed that he didn't bring more to the Shoot!  (Is jealousy a deadly sin?!? )

Here is the email, props to JJ for being up front about what is going on - communication goes a long way.

Dear Customer –

First, let me say THANK YOU for ordering one of my Remington 870 Bullpup
Conversion from our website. Your interest and confidence in the product tells
me that there is a demand for a quality conversion product for a reasonable price.

Second, I should tell you that there has been a slight delay in the shipment of the
projected October 1, 2011 orders. The short story is that a company producing
one of parts has been unable to reproduce the part for production, on their
sample parts they nailed it, but on the reorder we found the measurements were
just not up to our standards. I personally visited the company and the good news
is they are resolving the issue, but the bad news is we are now running behind on
production and shipping until we receive parts that meet our standards.

As a new Bullpup Unlimited customer, I feel I owe you an explanation and an
apology. Please accept this note to you as both. I hope that you will maintain
your order with us, but if you wish to have a complete refund I will personally
make sure Bullpup Unlimited honors your request.

Look for an e-mail from me notifying all website customers of the new ship-date –
thank you!

Respectfully,

J.J. Hunter
vice-president / inventor
Bullpup Unlimited, Inc.

I have been corresponding with JJ since the shoot and have every indication that this kit will happen.  Better to have it done right and a little late than the other way around....I have always been a Mossberg/Benelli guy when it comes to shotguns, but this kit has got me thinking about finding an 870 just for it....
Any indication on the new date yet?

We are hoping less than 30 days, but due to over 25 years in LE and 23 as range office I have been told I’m a little overly critical of this project but if I would not be happy I figure no one else would be either .  I do not want to put another shipping day incase for some unknown reason have to send out another letter to all that have been kind and trusting enough to do pre-paid orders.  Once again please forgive the delay.
Respectfully

To those of you that were able to handle this bullpup and the Keltec what were your opinions on the difference (excluding 14 shots vs 3-8 shots)?

The way i see it other than the side ejection and capacity this bullpup has me more interested than I was in the keltec due to these reasons:

1. Parts are easy to come by.

2. familiarity of parts/take-down

3. Proven reliability

4. multiple barrel options

5. less expensive to get into (you can find 870's for $200 then with the $350 you'd only be into it $550)

But I would like to handle them both side by side because I think the fit, feel, and how it points means a lot to me.

BTW I hope to see a version coming out for a bolt action rifle too

I would take the Bulllpup Unlimited 870 hands down.  The Keltec is cool, but seems a little bit gimmicky, and did start choking a bit later in the day.  The B.U. 870 is ultimately has a Remington 870 at its heart, and that shotgun has 40+ years of field use to prove it is reliable and what its quirks are.  Plus parts will *always* be vailable for the 870, and the B.U. stock allows for mag extensions and any barrel length you want, and you can swap out the grip for one that fits you best.

lol, this picture kinda says it all....

FWIW, based upon what I experienced at this past shoot, I would go for the Bullpup Unlimited 870 Conversion mostly for the reliability and ergonomics.  But keep in mind, the BU870 is based upon the specific donor 870 you put in it, so if you use an 870 with issues with cycling/feeding, etc, you will obviously continue to have issues once installed in this kit.  Lot's of folks are looking to pick up old/cheap used 870's for the converion kit.  Just make sure you check it for functionality and performance before you put it in the kit.

To be fair, the KSG seems to still need a bit more refinement/development.  I have my own suspicions as to why the KSG was having issues, but of course it is all anecdotal.  One point of suspicion is the vertical grip makes for a bit different dynamic, when pumping, then a conventional forend and tends to torque the action a bit...

From a usabilty standpoint, the BU870 all the way.  When KT irons out all the kinks, the 14+1 round capacity and ability to switch tubes is still an unrivaled feature advantage....

Would the mag extension that would meet the end of a 24" barrel be a 9 shot extension? So 9+1??

I want shorter the better, but the 20" looks darn good.....even another 4" on that one pictured would still be pretty damn handy.
