Probably old news for a lot of you but figured I'd throw it out there.

I have loaded and fired a decent amount of .223 and 6.5 grendel with WSR primers with no issues in the last year or so. I noticed that the last few newer cases of WSR primers are gold instead of the silver color they were in the boxes I bought.

So the latest batch of reloads in both calibers I used some of the newer gold ones and I had several slam fires. I have a few thousand of them in my garage now too. I guess I should have been buying the CCI 450s instead.

The only variable is the primers(yes, the primers are all seated properly), I guess the hardness changed with the material?  Out of an AR15.

I have a habit of picking up a 1000 pack of primers everything I'm at the store so im sitting on a quite a few.  I guess I should have been buying the CCI 450s instead.

When Winchester dropped nickel coating many high consumption highpower rifle shooters noticed that the cups did not meet pressure like the older primers.  Many have since changed to CCI and Remington.

For the 6.5G, I use Remington 7 1/2's, no issues

You won't get slam fires if the primer is seated from .002 to .003 below flush.

I use Win SR primers the old and the new with no issues.

Well the silver ones i have were purchased not that long ago. Must be some old stock.

I've used tens of thousands of gold Winchester primers without issue.

And the nickel primers were phased out ages ago, and yes the gold primers are a little more sensitive that the nickel ones. And I have never had even a single slamfire that wasn't caused by my crappy old LEE hand primer wearing out. I replace it with an RCBS primer long, long, ago.

I'm pretty thorough about seatng my primers and checking them.

But it's probably me messing up something.

Not about to throw in the towel on them, that's for sure.

Random thought. Do ya'll think it's possible for a very overgassed rifle to contribute to a slamfire?

What is the lot number?

I've gone through a couple thousand as well without issue.

Yes.

Have you checked your head space on your brass - make sure that it's not to long?  I don't know if the bolt forcing a too long shell into the breach would contribute to a slam fire but it certainly would be an area of concern...

Seat your primers, not flush, but below flush.

Apparently, not too surprising considering the guy I got them from.

So upon further inspection, it looks like I have a couple in the last batch do look like they are flush or near as dammit to flush. Between that and how over gassed the rifles were its no wonder I was having problems.

Never seen a plated Win primer, think maybe dad mentioned they used to be once.

Load Winchester primers almost exclusively, have well over 10k through three ARs, have doubled once, and it may have been an unintended bumpfire.

I prefer Win primers. Like the way they seat better than CCI.

Bought at least 6-7k of them..never seen a silver one.

dryflash, I use the press mounted RCBS swaging die set for all my brass along with having totally clean pockets due to SS media wet tumbling.  I haven't had a high primer since employing these two steps.  Doesn't this help to eliminate or at least strongly diminish the chance for a primer pocket to allow a high primer?

Well we're  here talking about primer pockets.

Dryflash, does uniforming primer pockets have a noticeable effect on your loads consistency/performance?

I've thought about starting too.do that.

They changed to unplated 10-15 years ago,  I still have some.   They changed the packaging at the same time.  Dark Blue Box = no plating. My White/Red are plated.

I bought a sleeve in 2005, that I am just now using to load some 30carbine.  They are gold and I haven't had any problems out of them.
