Got some Hodgdon H335 the other day.

While I was checking my powder list, for .223, the store owner brings H335 up to the counter.

Tells me how well it meters etc. I get home and start reading and notice it requires a magnum primer.

Sort of sucks because I have 200 cases prepped and primed with CCI 400

So I guess I need some different primers in the future.

What primers should I look out for?

And why does this powder require a magnum primer?

Sometimes ball powder is better ignited by a magnum primer, H-414 and the 30/06 come to mind. But as far as the .223 and H335 is concerned I have never needed to use mag primers with it.

335 in the past, 748 for long time, and WC-844 in 223/556 and 22-250.. all used WSR and CCI-400, CCI-200 in the 22-250's......   Carry on

Been using either CCI BR4 or Federal 205M with H335 and got some really great groups with that combination.

No issues here with CCI small rifle primers and H335

I've run into the same advisory with BLC2.  WSR primers have worked for me.

General rule of thumb is magnum primers for ball powders, standard for stick powders.

Obviously it's not a hard rule, just a general guide.

Watch those CCI 400 on heavy loads of H335, I've had issues of severe primer

flattening when approaching 5.56*45 NATO level loads.

Its not just an internet rumor, The Speer reloading manual  states that it requires a  magnum primer.

I always rely on my manuals before the interwebs.

Remington 7 1/2 SR primers are great small rifle primers and works perfectly for all powders either ball or extruded in .223. Most recommended primers are RP 7 1/2 or CCI 450 or 41's for AR loading but others are used with satisfaction. Just don't use RP 6 1/2 primers for .223 or other high pressure 22 calibers.

Ive loaded plenty over a Federal AR Match primer, which is not a magnum primer.  Your good to go.

I wonder if the confusion comes from the whole military primer thing, since H335 is usually used for M193 clone loads. A lot of people use the CCI41 or KVB223M military style SR primers.

With Tula primers, the KVB223M and KVB556M are both listed as "magnum primers", however the KVB223M is just their normal small rifle primer with the hardened cup to resist slam fires in semi-autos, and the KVB556M is the small rifle magnum primer with the hard cup.

Bottom line though, H335 works fine with regular SR primers.

While standard primers will make your ball powder go bang, I've found that magnum primers help with ignition enough that I get slightly better velocities and slightly lower SD and ES with them.  So, for normal AR fodder, Win and CCI SR do fine but for my long range 68grn precision loads with TAC, I use Reminton 7½ (magnum) primers.

BTW, as I use ball powders exclusively in all 16 calibers on my 650, I'm moving away from std primers and only buying magnum, however, I have such a large stock of std primers on hand, it will be years before I'm totally switched over.

In extreme cold ball powder can have problems with ignition when using standard primers. It doesn't get that cold here in Mo. I use standard primers and have never had a problem. Thousands and thousands of rounds down range.

This has been my experience as well. I use WC-844 and H-335 in .223, and .308 as well as some other mid sized cartridges and standard primers have always worked good.

I see this "warning" about H-335 and .223 with CCI-400s but wonder how may have actually done a side by side comparison.

I know one rifle and one load work up does not prove much but I have done it and saw absolutely no noticeable difference between CCI-400s and CCI-450s using 55gr bullets and LC-11 brass in a 5.56 chamber AR-15. In fact some of the 450s looked flatter than the 400s.

We've never used magnum primers for H335.  My son uses it in his .223 reloads (tried it in .308 but got better groups with IMR4895).  He uses either Federal or Tula small rifle primers.  No issues.

I use CCI 400 and Winchester SR primers under H335 with zero problems

H335 lights up with all standard power level primers....
I have used CCI,winchester, remington and federal standard primers
all with excellent results in very cold to very hot conditions.
Some of the slower ball powders from Winchester in larger calibers like magnum primers.

I believe the Speer manual "recommends" a magnum primer not necessarily "requires" at least that is how I understood it.

The Speer manual is the only one I have seen to do this also. This is another case for have multiple data sources.

I have never had any problem in .223/5.56 using standard primers with ball type powders.

I use standard primers in my 25DTI while using h335. I've got better results with Rem 7/1/2 versus CCI 400. But you could always use magnums and do another work up.
