I could use some load advice. I just got a late friends S&W 57 and I have all the reloading supplies for it but no load data.
What would be a good load up for white tail deer with what I have?

Sierra 170gr JHC
Hodgdon H110
Alliant Unique
Alliant Blue Dot
CCI 300 primers
Winchester # WLP
mixed brass

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

ETA: The barrel is 8 3/8"

Update. I got some load data from alliant and wanted to see what you guys thought.

Unique powder: Start 10.5  Max 11.5
CCI 350 primer
1.580 OAL
90% crimp

You know to be honest I forgot to look in them.

All I have are older ones.
Hornady 3rd edition
Speer #10
Lyman 45th edition
And a Lyman 1st edition shotshell hand book.

W296 & h110 are the go to's for MAX loads if out to plink you'll want to light load or pick a different powder

Never had a 41. Been looking at them though.

Have loaded lots of 44 Mag with H110 and it's great.

Yea, you're not talking 4.0 grains of Titegroup in a 9 here.

Big cases= mucho powder.

There is nothing wrong with the data in the manuals you listed. Start on the low end of the data and work up, if you wish. I use W-296 which is very close to if not identical to H-110. I use a 210gr JHP and magnum primers. The load is top end book. It has proved to be very effective on Whitetails.

Only Sierra makes a 170 grain bullet. I suggest he goes to several of the powder manufacturer websites. I've loaded 170's in .41 Magnum and prefer heavy lead at lower velocities. Consider Power Pistol or Unique with starting loads. 1100 fps is a lot better than some of the 1400 to 1550 fps loads that slow burning powders create.

I agree. If I had the 170s and CCI-300s I would very likely work up a load with Unique.

Edit: Hodgdon manual #25 List a 170gr bullet but only H110 from the OP's list. It also calls for a magnum primer.

H-110 Start is 22.0gr and max is 24.0gr

My Sierra Manual (book form) is for rifle so I don't want to quote it. OP: If you really need, I have the disc version with pistol data but won't be able to access it and post the data until tomorrow. The rifle manual does list a Blue Dot load but does not have Unique.

I looked is a few other manuals and could possibly come up with a start load for Unique too.

I have used the Sierra 170s over H-110. Don't remember the charge weight. I do remember the impressive fireball they created out of my 4" and 4 5/8" revolvers.

Hodgdon website lists 23.5 to 26.5 grs of H-110 with the Sierra 170.

I used to have the same gun as you M57 w 8/38 in bbl. I used it for Pistol Metallic Silhouette shooting. The best load I had was using the Sierra 170 & Blue Dot. I'm sorry I don't have the data anymore to give you, because I quit reloading about 15 years ago and got rid of my records. I started back ma year ago, but not loading the 41. Try working up some loads with Blue Dot, the ones I had were pretty hot, since you had to knock down the Ram target at 200 meters.

Thanks for all the info guys. Guess I'm going to start working up some loads here soon.
My biggest hurdle was the 170gr bullets, I can find plenty of info on 200gr and up.
Just my luck.

I've had pressure issues when using Blue Dot in .41 Magnum, even at starting loads. Several sources have retracted data regarding Blue Dot in .41 Magnum citing wild pressure fluctuations caused by reasons unknown. Some sources have warned specifically against using it in .41 Mag.

I have been using Winchester standard large pistol primers with decent results. I've actually fired these revolvers (Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8", and 2 S&W M57 4") quite a bit in the last few years. I don't load this round past minimum starting velocities and can enjoy day long shooting without pain or flinching. 7.0 grains of WW-231 or 15.5 grains of IMR-4227 under a 215 grain lead semi-wadcutter gets me 950 fps +/- 20 fps. While no where near as powerful as standard loads, they are plenty powerful for self defense by anyone's standard. The same velocity as .40 S&W 180 grain bullets while weighing 35 more grains.

I think you'll enjoy shooting the 170's provided you don't load them hot. Any powder's starting load will have plenty of pop unless you're hunting deer.

Glad to help. Maybe you'll let me shoot it when you get some loads worked up? Never got to see the 57, but he showed me a holster he made for it.

Blue Dot in my Redhawk .41 Mag was abrupt as hell according to my notes.

Shooting the loads over a chronograph showed big extreme spread (over 200 fps) and no consistency in grouping at 25 or 50 yards.

H110 and L'il Gun have become my go to powders for all my magnum loads now.

Looked at my data;
I've used blue dot, unique and 2400  with the sierra 170. Good results with all three. The unique was used for milder "plinking" loads.

Wouldn't hesitate to use h110 or 296. Never used either in 41mag with the 170's, but for no particular reason. I have used 296 with heavier bullets in the 41. I've found those two work better in heavier loads so you might not see good results until you get to the upper limits of the load. That's been my experience in the 44 and 454 as well.

Thanks for the notice. I wasn't planning on using the blue dot for anything at the moment.
