Interested in reloading both the Pro Hunter and Accubond in 115 grain for the 6.8  for hunting whitetails in northern New York.  Which is your favorite?
And before anyone asks, yes I have been to 68forums.com and there's really no consensus there.
Thanks!

The pro hunter has mixed reviews actually.  If you really search many people have had bullets fail.  Accuracy seems very good...  so I think bench shooters love them for this reason.   The accubond has very good performance reviews and is easily sub moa.  Harrison took an elk with one in a 6.8 so it has the construction for it.  I use the accubond if you cant tell....  ladder up to about 32.5gr of h335 and it will do 2800fps or so.  Accuracy for me was best at 31.5.  Function was best around 30gr.  H322 works great as well.  Slightly better groups with only a slight drop in speed.

For what its worth these are both 110gr bullets not 115 per your post.  Federal makes loaded ammo in the fusion line at 115.  Great reviews on those too.

I suggest the Accubond.  It's a fantastic overall bullet, and performs very well in all game types.

The prohunter is a decent bullet, but the 11ogr AB is better. I'm assuming the poster above me is referring to a 20" barrel for velocity of 2800fps. If you have a 16" , between 2650-2700fps depending on powder is where you'll be and find your sweet spot for accuracy. Mine is 2650-2675fps for best accuracy with AA2200, SSA cases, CCI 41 or 450s with the AB from a 16" ARP Recon.

The Elk shot from H was 372 yards, DRT by the way.

Don't overlook the Hornady 120 SST or the 100gr AB either. The 100gr will fly another 100fps faster than the 110gr, but really it's a wash on target and trajectory wise out to 400 yards.

One to mention, and probably the best, but not cheap, is the 95gr TTSX. It expands down to 1600fps, so it works to around 450 yards from a  16", and @ 500 from a 20" as far as expanding, but I would stick to no more than 400 yards as at 1600fps you're down in energy below what I would like to see with it.

110 Grain Nos Accubond

They shoot really well in my 16" ARP.

My bad- they are 110 grain bullets.
Looks like I'll start with the Accubond for whitetail and keep the Pro Hunters for smaller prey.
I'm shooting a 16" in the deep woods so any shot would be fairly close range.
I do have some Barnes TSX that I'll work up a load with H-322 for (too much work around camp this year and not enough shooting!)
  Thanks for all the replies.

Outside of elk, I shy away from controlled expansion bullets like the Accubond, TSXs, gmxs, etc. I find cup and core bullets to be more accurate, and perform better on smaller thin skinned game like antelope, mountain lions, whitetails, and Muleys.

Certainly not trying to start anything with this but...  my fps claim was from H. Himself.

http://68forums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=284340

110gr Nosler Accubond info

32.5gr of H335 with the 110s loaded to 2.295" will produce over 2800fps from our 16" barrels. Expansion and penetration was good at 372yds on an elk.<br />
34gr of H335 was my max load out of the old ......

I have not personally verified the claim so I will not defend it further.

On topic.  Ive noticed over the past few years whitetail references that fail to account for region.  I have always hunted in northern michigan where the whiteys are big and stout.  I see many deer taken from other parts of the county that are the size of our fawns in november.  I witnessed a 6pt Michigan buck shot with a 300 win mag 180gr remy coreloc.  It was a double shoulder shot and the bullet came to rest just under the hide on the far side.  Expansion was good.  Penatration ideal, sorta...  you would expect the win mag to pass through.  If that deer can stop that bullet I worry about cup bullets in lighter calibers.  I agree with most of what you said, but differ on the whitetail being grouped together with the other animals.   Back before I could afford a decent gun, I hunted with a sporterized 91/30.  I used a 180gr sp on a spike the last day of season.  The bullet entered behind the shoulder and exited the neck AND the other shoulder.  The winchester branded bullet failed completely.   Since making the switch to controlled expansion, along with most of my camp, we have enjoyed much cleaner kills on OUR size deer.  Again, not trying a contest here, just pointing mostly at not all whitys being equal.

Our whitetails are pretty large as well here in northern New York (over five hours and a world from New York City).
And thanks for the explanation of controlled expansion vs cup and core bullets construction.

Both should do fine, generally speaking.  While I do not have a 6.8 I have experience with both bullets in several calibers. Right now I am working with 125 grain bullets in .30-06 running 2800-2900.  Started with Youth loads and now my daughter and I are both shooting the same full bore load.  One rifle/one load/one set of dope.  Have used the SST, ProHunter, Nosler BT Hunting and Accubond.

I am really liking the Accubond, it is bonded but it is designed to expand and shed the front section like a Partition bullet and penetrate.  I would recommend them if you can keep your velocity up above 2600-2700.  In the 2400-2600 fps range I really like the Pro Hunter and SST.

I just shot my buck with pro hunter in 6.8 at 50 yards
Shot behind left shoulder, took out 1/3 of heart and destroyed right shoulder. I found the bullet just under the hide, it did not exit.  The bullet retained 98 grains so it didn't completely disentigrate. He ran about 25 yards. Overall I'm happy with the bullet but I kinda wish it would have exited to help bleed out. I agree on a larger deer i probably want a stronger bullet

I've shot 9 whitetails with the 110 pro hunter. Very happy with the performance. When I finish the 2 boxes of 100 I bought, I'll probably go to the 95 TTSX to stretch the max range.

I killed my buck at 185yds last year with a Sierra Pro-hunter at 2300 fps. The bullet entered low in the brisket about 10" behind the shoulder, shattered it, angled forward thru the lungs tearing them apart, and lodged in the opposite shoulder under the skin. The buck dressed out 120pounds and died after trotting about 40yds.

I've tried the 120 SST and the Accubonds and could never get the accuracy of the factory SSA ammo with the sierra bullet.

I have taken a muley and 3 whitetails with the pro hunter. All 4 deer had complete penetration, the 3 whitetails pretty much dropped in their tracks, the muley ran for about 20 yds with a destroyed heart.
The PH's, shot better than the TSX's, Accubonds and E-tips in my 18" Bison Armory barrel and were quite a bit less $$ to boot.

Thank you. It was no record breaker, it was probably 100-125 pounds on the hoof.  But a proud first kill using my reloads

Went out with Accubonds today but not luck.
This weekend ought to be the best hunting so here's hope!
Again, thanks for all the replies- I feel very good about the Accubonds and really wouldn't feel under gunned with Pro Hunters.
