I recently picked up a 7.5" Ruger redhawk in 44 mag and would like to get reloading for it.  Its main use would be pig and maybe a deer or two.

What do yourself guys suggest?

H-110 or Win-296 and a 240 or little heavier bullet. Most 240gr JHPs would probably work just fine. If you want to get fancy you can go with Hornady' s Leverevolution bullet.

I got some of the leverevolution bullets and after looking into the brass requirements (shorter) and how little advantage they acquire in .44 i passed them on.

Unique is extremely versatile and you can load it down to 900 fps or less with a 240 for a cast plinker round or load up into a pretty hot round. Burns a little fast for cast in hotter loads. 9 gr with a 200 gr is pretty similar to a classic 44/40 load for example.

2400 is the classic and is excellent for full house rounds of all sorts. IIRC the Keith load was a bit hot by modern standards (250gr lsw with 22gr 2400), but you can see 1400fps or better with a 240gr with many loads published.

Well trying to hit a Pig @ 100 yards (an you won't get any closer - because I've tried - unless you get lucky) hard to do with a Redhawk - I've tried.  But it was fun.  Don't know about Deer, never tried it.  But for pigs I ran a 240grn proj, using 15.9 grn of ACC#7.  But never did get a pig.  Rifles are better.

240 gr, Hornady XTP's with 23-23.5 grains of Winchester 296 powder primed with CCI 350 magnum primers. Win or RP brass both have been good in my loads. Good full powered load and accurate in my Super Blackhawk and Win rifle. Don't reduce powder charges very much at all with H110 or Win 296 and use magnum primers. If you want to shoot milder loads use 2400 powder and published data and work up to top loads.

Bingo , this gentleman is spot on .  Old Keith loads were pretty warm and the original 2400 was a bit different than what we get now..
I really see little reason to use jacketed bullets in 44 mag

Thanks for the advice. It will be a while before I have the gun in hand but this gives me a great starting point

The 240gr hard cast will work on deer and pig. To step it up a notch, the above 300gr post will knock the socks off of a pig.
Good Luck.

180 xtp with max H-110 (i don't recall what max is and I'm too lazy to look).  Shot placement is key as this load will really damage the meat.(deer). Also if it is dusk make sure you hit with the first shot as you will be blind for the follow up shot.
