I recently dug out the reloading gear again, I've always used mostly unique for 38 spl and mild 357 loads but it's dirty as hell, and I really don't care to go buy multiple kinds of powder to find one I like, any recommendations of a cleaner burning replacement? 95% of loads will be using a lead 158gr bullet.
Thanks

I ditched Unique for the same reason - it's a filthy powder.

I've tried a few but use W231 for 38/357 (and all my other handgun cartridges - 9mm, 45, etc).  I also use W296 for full power 158 gr 357 loads but it is more of a specialty powder.

I think W231 is what you want, if you can find it.

Universal Clays, similar burn rate to unique, much cleaner.

May sound weird but Winchester Autocomp shoots great with 158 lead

in my 38. Never used it for 357.  It's made for a completely different application

but if it works it works. Worth trying if you can't get your hands on the usual

Powders because of the market.

38 Special 158 grain
231/HP38 or Bulleye for lead in mine.
3.1 grains of Titegroup works well too but not ideal for lead.

I rarely load 357 so I can't recall what I liked best.

Add me to the list of W231 supporters for 38 spl and W296/H110 for 357 mag.

All that I use is A no 5 all I could get my hands on when I started. It works good for me. I reload .380 9mm 40 and 38 spc

True Blue. Will go light to heavy loads, cast or jacketed.

Also great in 9mm and 45 ACP.

Sounds promising....would it work in .41 magnum, 4" revolver?

Trail Boss powder.  It was designed for lead bullets. I use it for all of my cast bullet loadings.

Examples:

38 special - 3.5gr with either the Lee 140gr SWC or the Lee 150gr RN

45acp - 4.4gr with the Lee 230gr RN

30-06 - 15gr with the Lee 160gr RN (gas-checked)

If I am loading plated bullets in 38 special, then I go with Unique (the new stuff, not dirty like the old stuff), or WW231.

700X is also a good powder in 38 special.

I love tight group for 38spl and 2400 for 357. But good luck finding any 2400. H110 will suffice and they are all relatively clean when considering I cast lead and most of the smoke and carbon seems to come from the bullet lube.

Unique is not as dirty as it used to be. I use Bullseye or Unique for cast and plated bullet loads in both 38 and .357 I don't doubt the other suggestions like True Blue and some others are excellent also.

I have used Unique for magnum loads in the .357 with 110 and 125 grain bullets too but you really can't beat H-110 or Win-296 for top end 357mag loading. Come to think of it that is true for .41 and .44 and .500 mag too.

For me it's HP-38 in the 38 and H110 in the 357.

38 = Bullseye
357 = H110
