Hello all,

Recently I moved to a small apartment and the gf has really gotten into shooting rifle and pistol.

I've owned a dillon 650 for about 1.5 years a dillon 550 before that.  With the need for more ammo I find myself fallen behind with the single stage for rifle and  with her asking to shoot competition with her 9mm I'm needing a conversion setup for the 650 because it's set up for 45acp currently.

I remember how much cheaper and mostly easier to switch calipers the 550 was. The reason I mentioned small apartment info is because I know typical arf wisdom says buy both but I barely have room for a single stage no less 2 progressives

Question: is it dumb to go from a loaded 650 back to a 550?

Calibers that's needed: 223, 9mm, 45acp, 22-250 and possibly 260rem. I may still reload my 260 for pride reasons on my single stage..
Neither of us shoot as much as we would like to but when we do its a range of calipers and ranges.

I'm open for any suggestions

Thanks

The 650 excels at mass handgun reloading. If you need to pump out a lot of quality handgun reloads, the 650 is for you.
If you want a lot of quality rifle loads, I would tip my hat more toward the 550 side.

For me, this question would come down to which do you need more of, if you interested more in handgun competitions, the 650 would probably be my route. If you are interested more in rifle, I would go with a 550. If you are a three gunner and need a lot of both, I would honestly go with the 550.

One you pick up a solid rhythm it isn't hard to really move on a 550, granted it will never be as fast as a 650 with the Auto index, but it is still fast in and of itself.

Personally, a 550 is one of the last machines I would get rid of if I had to cull out my bench.

Truer words were ever spoken.

I'd swing for the 650. IF the GF shoots as much as she does. There's nothing wrong with her stepping up to the press every once in a while. Friend, shooting buddy / board member sold me (ok some trading was involved)) his 650 due to lack of space, kept the 550. Flash forward 1 yr, he's making room for a new 650 that was delivered thursday.

Bottom line is, either choice will be a good one.

Thinking a little (or a lot) outside of the box, have you thought about getting a Lee nutcracker press for reloading the 22-250 & 260 on and storing your single stage press? Unless you shoot a fair bit of the 22-250 and 260, it nutcracker press is a reasonable option.

I load precision rifle rounds on a 650.  If i am loading precision rounds with stick powder, i throw them light then pull the case and trickle up.  Reinsert case and seat a bullet.  I am a big fan of the 650 and am glad i got it. The chances of a dOuble charge are less with a 650 as well.

Why not mount your single stage on a lee quick change base and get a Lee classic turret and mount it the same way. Switch one out for the other if space is a concern.

A lot of people don't even bother to case trim there fired straight walled pistol shells. I do at, least for the first reloading. After that... The lee turret can produce a good amount of finished rounds in a short time loosing the trimming step.

Use the single for your rifles though the turret can easily do your 5.56.

Thanks for all the advice, alot of good ideas and suggestions.

I was unaware of the lee quick change mounting plate and I think I'm going to go that route.

Leaning towards keeping the 650 and either getting a lee turret or trying to find a used 550.

God bless

I have deep pockets when it comes to reloading machines.

There is a reason why I have two 550s and three 1050s and zero 650s on my bench.

well the 1050's cancel the 650's for sure, after dumping a couple of ea. 550's and 650's  I recently added a 550 for making wildcat brass

I think it's a matter of personal preference.  I would tell your girlfriend right off the bat you'll buy the change over kit but she must buy components and reload her own ammo if she wants to use the press.  I believe your girlfriend would appreciate the 650 more than the 550 once she learns how to do the change over and setup the dies properly.

If the ONLY reason you're considering switching is the cost of caliber changes I wouldn't do it.  I would guess the 9mm conversion will work with 22-250 and 223 as it does on the 550.  If that is true you only need one conversion plate and the cost to reload the other calibers is the cost of the dies if you don't have them already.

by the way....calipers = tool used to measure COAL

Very nice.

Back on topic, OP, I don't think it would be foolish to go back to a 550. I only use a 500 and single stage now and don't see myself ever stepping up to the 650. I reload too many calibers and enjoy the slower pace and added control the 550 gives me when it comes to processing brass or loading finished rounds.

pretty sure its a spolar gold.... unbelievable press for shotshells...

anyways, I love my 550B, gives me flexibility in loading for rifle cal's without much trouble. surprisingly accurate with them too, as the sizing step which creates the flex that people are worried about with inconsistency is done on a separate toolhead via my setup. the charging, seating, and crimping (depending on caliber, mostly no crimp) are done and in checking case head base to ogive and headspace dimensions on the cases using precision mic's and hornady's comparator sets vary .001" at most.

I shoot a hell of a lot more pistol calibers than I do rifle.  I would keep the 650 and set it up for mass production of 9mm rounds.

Do you have any pistol caliber carbines?  I have several simply due to the fact I almost always have a supply of 9mm ammunition around.

I have a 550 that I use for bulk pistol and a Forster Co-Ax for everything else.  I wish I had gotten my Co-Ax 25 years ago.  I do load development on the Co-Ax as well as needed duties like depriming, etc.

Anyhoo the 650 is the machine for cranking out pistol ammo.  You need capacity, particularly now that you have another shooter to supply.

For space considerations perhaps you can consider a system for your reloading bench that allows you to quickly swap out your presses?  That way you can have your cake and eat it too.  I use wingnuts, bolts and washers to mount my accessories (case trimmer, several different powder measures, etc.) when I am actually going to use them.  Luckily I have the space to permanently mount my presses.
