I have been out of the 'game' for a couple of years - so what would be a good purchase price for a 5 gallon bucket of all brass? Mostly sorted to handgun and long gun? Difference? I would be keeping the best of the calibers I shoot to reload and selling the excess in lots of 1000 or so. I just want to know what to offer - I may have a lead on 20 5 gallon buckets........

Depends what kind of brass it is. 9mm has a different value than .223, .308 or .50bmg. .22LR brass is always scrap unless you swage it into bullet jackets.

The only time brass has the same value is when it's scrap, and then it's worth whatever your local yard is paying per pound.

Check out the EE for prices on different calibers of brass (usually in 1k lots) and then go look at what you're thinking of buying, so you can accurately make an offer.

+1 All I know is you can get around 2,500 223 in a 5gal bucket if that helps.

Free works.  I have a bout 5 -5 gallon buckets of brass.  I didn't pay a penny for the brass or the buckets.

It will take quite a while to sell them in 1k piece lots considering that a 5 gallon bucket of 9mm alone will hold over 12k pieces of brass. It may be easier selling it at a gunshow if you have a table. 1.75 - 2.50 a pound is about average for scrap brass at the recyclers.

OK - thanks for the info - it gives me a place to start. When the prices were crazy, I sold maybe 30k cases. I'm down to maybe 100k, so I won't sell any more of mine - but would like to turn this new source into some folding money. I'll let you know what I get it for - if I get it....

It is sorted into handgun and rifle.....mostly .223 and 9mm/.40

.223/5.56 goes for $60-65/1k shipped, 9mm is $35-40/1k shipped, unprocessed, sorted for defects, with most genuine people throwing in ~5% extra.

Find out local scrap value of brass.

Offer slightly more than that.

Bottom of the pic is a 3 gallon bucket 3/4 full of 9mm brass. I paid $10 at the funshow last month.

How much does that weigh?

If you could get brass that cheap all the time there is a place that gives you $2.50-$3 per pound of brass towards purchasing ammo from them.

How do you plan on sorting and cleaning it? I bought a 40 gallon drum of range brass back in March and I just finished sorting through it in June. Its pretty labor intensive even with the sorter plates. If i had to guess weight maybe 300 - 400 lbs. After sorting it came out to 2 five gallon buckets of 9mm, 1 bucket of 40, 3/4 bucket of 45acp, 1/2 bucket of 380, 1/2 bucket of 38 spl/357, 1/4 bucket of assorted aluminum and steel cases, and another 1/4 bucket of oddball stuff.

I'm really close to locking this thread and issuing a warning for a stealth attempt to market your brass.  That is as close to the line as I'll permit.

AeroE - don't lock it on my account. I don't have said brass to sell and if the price is out of line - I won't buy said brass. I know we have been down this road before and you are wrong, again, I have no ulterior  motives - just seeking information from like minded fellows....kinda what these forums were invented for. I have no interest in your permits or stretching them. I have sold many brass case lots and other items, in the past - I used the EE. As far as I know, I have never had a less than good transaction. Kinda easy to check on that little number rating thing at the right side of my posting box?

i don't pay more than scrap for buckets of brass. No matter how much ones says it's 1x fired. You'll run in to blown 38 & 357 cases, steel cased jammed in there for volume. 223 that's clearly 2-3x, based on the swagging it's been subject to.  Don't forget to deduct 5% minimum off weight for dirt and rocks/pebbles stuck in case mouths.  I was averaging 3700 pcs of 223 per 5 gal bucket.

You eat your labor and materials when selling brass. You also compete with the folks who get their brass for nothing, as they work the PD or local range. There are 2-3 folks in the EE who get theirs for nothing and show it in their pricing.

FWIW: IMO your post about letting us know, does sound like you're pre selling.

Well - then that may be an error on my part - I don't think so, nor was it my intention.

Locally here scrap brass sells for about $1.25-.30 per pound.
I just sold a 5gal. bucket of it about a month ago. A full bucket is  ~60 pounds.

Dryflash, where do you typically find your brass?

The only indoor range in town that sells brass wants top dollar for mixed buckets.

Outdoor ranges are picked clean almost before the brass hits the ground.
