What's the number one go to powder for the good ole 44, using plated or jacketed bullets?

Big difference between 44 special plated and 44 mag jacketed. for the latter I like Alliant 2400.

Favorite is probably Accurate 9 with 250gr Nosler Partition Gold for Mag.

Unique for medium/low power stuff, H110 for full power 44 Mag.

Unique works well in the Special too.     Good luck finding any in stock anywhere.

W296 for full power.

When I first started loading it, all I had was Bullseye... What a super weak magnum... Not sure why its even listed in books. Tried 2400 but havent gotten a load I like with cast or plated. My favorite plinking round is Berry's plated on top of Blue Dot with medium charge. Fun and wrist isnt too sore to shoot rest of day...

This is the ticket, the only powders I use in .44.  Unique is excellent in both, and Win 296 is a lot of fun and very accurate.

H110 / W296 for making it a magnum IMR4227 is a decent alternative.
Unique or W231/HP38 for plinking loads with hard cast lead or plated bullet.

My favorite load is Sierra 180gr JHP with a stout charge of 110/296....
A hard cast lead SWC with in the neighborhood of 8gr of Unique is tough to beat.

.44 Special = Power Pistol
.44 Magnum = 2400.  (I also like blue dot since I seem to have a bunch of it.)

+1 on unique for lower powered magnum loads. H110. & w296 are very good powders (iirc hornady has factory equilavent loads with these powders). My personal favorite these days is hodgdon Lil' gun. Shoots very accurate and will cycle my gas semi-auto.

Lil' Boy.
Same ballistics as H110/W296, with a little less powder.

Blue Dot for both.

Unique for Special and low to medium Magnum loads.
AA9, 2400, H110 or W296 for full power Magnum loads. (depends on which powder is in stock)

I used H110 for years in magnum tried some ramshot enforcer with some 300 Barnes I picked up and loved it clean and does not have the muzzle flash H110 has have not had a chance to chrono them yet but they feel good for special and light mag I use unique.

This is my experience as well...  Shot mostly 2400 with great results (for many years) before trying others.

For Special or light Magnum loads I'll use Universal Clays the most, but any powder I find near that burn rate works fine for me. I stick to H110 for full Magnum loads. Universal Clays with a 240 grain SJHP is what I load for my Smith 329 that gets carried into the back country.

It's hard to beat Unique for target loads and WW296-H110 for full power loads... many years of this combination...

For my 44 mag reloads, I use 2400 for bullet weights 240 and down.  For the 'heavy' weights, I use 296.

Same here.  I've used a little 2400 and H110, but W296 was better for my two .44 magnums.  Oops, 3.  Some day, I gotta make a list.  Haven't shot the M29 or the Ruger Super Blackhawk in about 30 years.  Shot the Dan Wesson about 3 years ago.

I use Unique for plain cast, and 2400 for jacketed and cast with gas checks. Only 44mag I have left is a 16" lever action carbine.

This. I reload H-110 with jacketed for a friend and it will give you max velocity, but only has a small reloadable window. It's pretty much high velocity or choose another powder!

It shoots great though!

I've used the old E Keith load of 2400 for 240gr 44 mag for 35yrs and have never felt a need to use anything else, though I like the way 296 meters. I also use 2400 for .44special "black bear" (vs grizzly) loads and some lighter practice loads.

For soft shooting loads for the 44 Special, try Clays.  Also good for soft shooting loads in 45 Colt, 45 ACP and 40 S&W.  I go for comfort, not speed.
