I'm currently loading RMR 158gr plated bullets for .38 special.

I finally scored some .357 powder, so I'd like to start loading some full power .357 loads.

I'd like to stay away from lead/plated, as they will be shot out of a 18" lever action & velocites will be in the 1900 - 2000fps range (125 gr) I assume.

I'm thinking about 125gr Hornady XTP...

Any other good ones I should consider? I'm open to all weights, manufactures, ect.

I've had very good results with the (cheap) Remington SJHP. (ShortJacketHollowPoint) I've not shot them in a carbine but have shot a helluva bunch of them through a S&W 686.
The 158 gr are accurate and perform VERY well on deer.

What are you going to be doing with the reloads?

Plinking ?

"Dramatic effect" ? ( Blasting milk jugs.. )

Personal Defense ?

Hunting ?

I would use different bullets for all four of those.

Glad to help just need more info. After we know the intended use .. you will get all sorts of input.

Speer

Forgot to include that. For now, just plinking & occasional blasting of water jugs.

In the future I may hunt with this rifle, but not at this point in time.

The Remington JHP's used to be a real good bullet for the money back in the days before I started casting.

I shot plenty of the 125's with 20gr of H110 and they are flame throwers out of my 4" GP100.

If you're hunting anything bigger than a coyote, then you'll want to use something either 158gr or 180gr.    The lighter JHP bullets just vaporize when pushed to rifle speeds and wouldn't be appropriate for a quick kill on deer-sized game.

The Remington 158 gr SJHP is a very good bullet for the price. A good all around carbine bullet.

A little easier on the rifle and the powder budget. ( smaller powder charge weight. )

Patsreloading.com has them at a excellent price.

He also shows the 125 XTP ( he will need to check stock )

For the use you have written ... you really can't go wrong with the Remingtons.

Get some 158 gr XTP's if you can.  I have both 125 and 158's.

I actually do the opposite. I use 125 XTPs for 38 special and 158  XTPs for .357's.

What's everyone's opinion on Montana Gold bullets?

I see they have good prices on JHP bullets.

Would these hold up to the velocities they will be shot at?

If you can find them, the Hornady 140 grain XTP is outstanding for accuracy and velocity.   Montana Gold bullets are good as well.  I like their 125 JHP.

I like their products and ordered many K when they were in stock and lower priced than they are now. Good customer svc and fast response time if they miss your call.
Keep em under 2500fps. They told me 3K fps. i err on the side of caution.  . I did a 100 FP loads, using hornady 158gr xtp"s. Outside of velocity, the only thing i did was waste powder i could have used, for more lower velocity rounds.

I like Zero's 158grn JSP bullets in both of my Rossi leverguns.  I shoot them out to 300yds with pretty good accuracy considering that they are pistol bullets.  You can get from Rose Distribution.  They are currently out of stock on their 125grn versions and their HP versions too.
