I know its kinda new powder but some of you have to be using it? , i recently scored a pound of it at the LGS, which was a 1 pound limit..

Will be loading up some 124 and 147gr extreme  bullets eventually and possibly some 200 and 230 gr extreme and 230gr zero jacketed bullets.

So anyone have any good loads worked up and even better chrony results?  Yes i know work up, just curious what people are doing with this newer powder.

Last year, I loaded 100 rounds of 308, 165 grainer TTSX with 42 grains of CFE if I remember correctly.   It didn't preform as well as TAC or 8208 in my 16 inch barrel Scar.  I have a couple lb on my shelf, but doubt I'll ever load up any more. I think it was a little over 100 FPS slower on the chrono.

He's talking about CFE Pistol, not CFE 223.

I find it interesting that Hodgdon released this powder during a powder panic and even marketed it, yet like I said earlier, I have never seen it before.  The advertising I saw for it even had a claim of cleaning your barrel as you shoot.

I've got a few lbs of it, and just loaded up the first rounds with it for testing, but likely not going to be able to shoot or chrono until next weekend.
Loaded up so far:
4.4gr and 4.6gr CFE-P with Montana Gold 124gr [email protected]" (short chamber, have to load these short)
4.0 and 4.2gr w/Xtreme [email protected]

Want to chrono both before making any other loads up with it.

Awesome..id like to see the chrony results as in the hodgdon reloading magainze they list some load for this powder and seems pretty fast on their "claimed" FPS scale

post up what when you do please. thanks

How did Hodgdon's lawyers/risk mgt people ever let them call the stuff "CFE"?
You just know somebody is going to use the pistol powder in a rifle cartridge.

The same way there are three different Clays powders in Hodgdon line up.  Plus throw in Clay dot from Alliant.

I picked up some this week.  I'm trying to find a powder that will put bullets (at this point ANY bullet) to the same POI as factory 124gr GDHP through my G19 (my wife's G19 is a little less finicky).  I even have 124GDHP pulls and nothing so far has worked.  I also have Precision Delta 124gn FMJ.  Universal isn't close.  AA#5--wasn't.  Power pistol was promising, but it's no better.  CFE is also the only pistol powder available.

Any else notice the mfg date is 2008?!

I guess that isn't new as there was an article in HANDLOADER about the "new" powder Tin Star by Vit that when the author finally got some in 2013, he found out it was made in 2006!

Anyone using it post up some chrono results please, would like to see how this stuff is really running.

As i picked up the hodgdon reloading magazine with CFE loads in it and in the 9 and 45 loads it seems to be moving faster then most of powders listed..Just curious how it really stacks up..

Anyone see any load data around as a starting point for .357 Magnum 158 GR SWC (Lead)?

I see pistol data, but I'm not sure what it will do velocity wise out of a 16" Rossi 92 barrel.... This is a 10" barrel. I'm looking to load for a 16" barrel.

Case: Winchester; barrel length: 10"; twist: 1:18.75"; trim length: 1.285"; primer: Winchester SPM, Small Pistol Magnum. NEVER EXCEED MAXIMUM LOADS
Be Alert: Publisher cannot be responsible for errors in published load data.

Wt. Bullet Powder Manufacturer Powder Charge Velocity (FPS)

158 Meister Cast LSWC Hodgdon CFE Pistol 5.3 1123
Remarks: start load; bullet diam.: .358"; COL: 1.620"; 18,100 psi

158 Meister Cast LSWC Hodgdon CFE Pistol 6.6 1321
Remarks: max load; bullet diam.: .358"; COL: 1.620"; 28,500 psi

Any ideas?

Here's what I've come up with so far in 9mm:

4.6 grains under a 124 speer GDHP (these are 2nds from RMR) seated to 1.115"  (I use this seating depth which is a little shorter than the factory because it is the same setting that allows me to load the next bullet mentioned without messing with the seater die)  Yes, I've shot both depths with the same powder charge and I see no difference at 25yds.

Again 4.6 grains under a 124fmj Precision Delta bullet seated to 1.155"

Or, try 5.2 grains under the same fmj bullet.

I'm using a Glock 19 with trijicon night sights, VIckers mag release, slide release, and grip adapter.  Factory barrel.  With this glock it's all I can do to keep the rounds in a 8" IDPA center at 25yds.  With my HK45C I can keep my rounds in the same circle much easier.  (NO I'm not turning this into a who's the better manufacturer thread)  I'm just trying to post my completely subjective results in as open a fashion a possible.  My wife's G19, on the other hand is much easier to shoot, and it's not nearly as finicky about shooting reloads to the same POA as the factory speer 124gn GDHP that is our carry load.

I was able to chrono a few loads today with CFE-P.  I had some 147gr Xtremes loaded up as well, but the sun/chrono just weren't cooperative on that one (Hi 2442, which would be a PF pf > 300, just not buying it).
The MG loads had at least one outlier in the 4.4gr loads, probably should have either put a target across the sunscreen or colored in the bullets today (bright and warm), but looks to track against their published 125gr Sierras, or not too far off, with the MG 124gr JHPs..you can see some of my WSF loads with the same bullet for reference...going to load a few up at 4.8 and 5.0gr and chrono again from here.

Small world syndrome.  Picked up 4 pounds of this experimental powder today at the fun show.  I could have bought more but it was too expensive.   140 bucks for 4 pounds is what I paid.

Will be experimenting with 9mm, 40, 45, and maybe 380.

As I can and do load the Xtreme 124gr RNs much longer, I'm expecting them to run around 5-5.2gr at 1.13-1.15" OAL.
Need to re-test the Xtreme 147grs, as I think the 4.0gr is in the ballpark, just got excessively bright/direct sunlight as I was finishing up for the day, but will post when I re-test them.

Ok here is some data for CFE Pistol powder. It is a great powder and I really like it. First day with chrono and low end loads didnt produce anything good, but second day and near max/at max loads where AWESOME!

ProChrono was set about 4 feet from the muzzle. Fired off hand. FPS is average of 10 shots.

45ACP 230gr Xtreme RN boolits, 1.245 OAL, CCI 300, Mixed brass.

HK45T
5.8gr - 630fps
6.0gr - 690fps
6.2gr - 770fps
6.4gr - 815fps
6.6gr - 830fps

Dan Wesson 1911 Valor
6.4gr - 770fps
6.6gr - 820fps

9mm 115gr Xtreme RN boolits, 1.135 OAL, CCI 500, Mixed Brass

HK P30
5.2gr - 1025fps
5.4gr - 1060fps
5.6gr - 1090fps
Loads above are too weak.

Sig P226 Dark Elite
5.8gr - 1150fps
6.0gr - 1195fps <- my favorite

HK P2000SK
6.0gr - 1150fps <- worked great!

9mm 124gr Xtreme RN boolits, 1.135 OAL, CCI 500, Mixed Brass

HK P30
4.8gr - 965fps
5.0gr - 1005fps
5.2gr - 1050fps

Sig P226 Dark Elite
5.4gr - 1110fps <-great

HK P2000SK
5.4gr - 1050fps

For 147gr Xtreme boolit I only had one load with 4.0gr and it produced very weak 870fps with weak ejection and no slide lock. I will work it up with 4.2 and 4.4gr.

Try that CFE223 in a 223 round and see what you think.
I love this powder for 223.  26-26.5 grains works well.

It works for 308, but yeah, not the best choice.

I read on another forum that CFE Pistol is a pretty fast powder, so check and double check your recipes.

Not to hijack the thread but I tried the CFE223 at around 26.6 gr myself and velocity was really slow with an 18" barrel. I load to 27.5 grs now to get around 3000 fps.

I need to find a load with the CFE pistol for 9mm with X-Treme 147 gr bullets.

I am very happy I purchased this powder.   It performed very well for us the other day.    Unfortunately I don't have a chrony so I have to rely a bit on online data.

All test loads were done at minimum charge for now using Hodgdons online reloading data.

We tried the following at 50 rounds each.

147g RN Xtreme 9mm at 3.7g of CFE pistol loaded to 1.130"    Fired from a stock G34

115g RN Xtreme 9mm at 5.4g of CFE pistol also loaded to 1.130"    Fired from stock G34

180g Xtreme pho Hollow Points 40S&W at 5.9g of CFE pistol loaded to 1.135"  Fired from Kel Tec Sub2000.

All loads performed very well.  Felt great and were plenty accurate for me.
After reading seattledudes data, I think I would bump up a tenth of a grain or two on the 147g 9mm before I tried shooting it in IDPA to make sure we hit 125pf.

I doubt your 147gr Xtreme load above will make PF - you're at 3.7gr, while same bullet and almost identical OAL at 4gr barely makes PF for me.
Note in the data I posted previously - CFE-P didn't jump all that much in velocity going from 4gr to 4.2gr.
I'd expect you to wind up at *least* at 4gr to make PF with a reasonable cushion (which means, load to at least 130PF if you need to chrono for your matches)

4.0 grains behind a 147 gr Bear Creek at 1.150 OAL are running 884 fps from a 1911. Standard deviation was 13 FPS. The 147 gr Bear Creek bullets actually average about 149.5 grains. That puts the PF at 132.

After the last match, I found it burns clean but leaves a few unburnt yellow powder flakes. My favorite powder for these bullets, AA #5, also burns clean but leaves a few unburnt powder flakes.

I found 4.8 gr under a 124 gr LRN or plated worked pretty well and was likely the starting point to build on.  Also 4.0 gr. of CFE/P under 147 gr. LFP shoots pretty nice, if not nearly as dirty as the same charge of Auto Comp.  The CFE load was about 20-25 fps faster in my M&P Pro 5", though more tests are needed due to lousy light conditions.  The AC load is my Steel Challenge load in two different Pro's, one being a CORE with RMR.   The AC load is running about 930 fps avg. in a 5" Pro.

Loaded up some CFE Pistol under a 158gr Zero JHP to test out in a .357 lever action.

I like its accuracy, can't say much for cleanliness as I only shot 25 rounds.

Haven't had the chance to chrono them, but I'm curious to see what kind of velocity I am getting from the longer barrel. I will update when I get some chrono data.

This was at 50 yards, open sights. Good enough for me.
