I picked these up at the range last week -- they are once fired LC '13 brass. Clearly, these are from the deflector on an AR. This is after cleaning and resizing. Everything I have seen online suggests not using ones with a crease, but a ding is OK. I don't have enough experience to determine if these are "dented" or "creased". I'd be using these for plinking loads (1200-R and 55gr FMJ) in an AR.

It might be the lighting, but the lower two look okay and the upper one -- lying on the Scotch Brite pad -- looks like one that I'd throw away, The bottom two looks like the dents can be removed by fireforming plus reforming in the die

As cheap as brass is these days I would just pitch them. Top definitely looks like a crease, bottom right fairly so. Bottom left looks like more of a dent.

I'd reload all with deflector marks unless they have a cut in the brass. Any with cuts or displaced metal I'd scrap.

Let me bust the macro lens out, I'll snap some more pictures.

Those may still work, but...

Hard extraction distortion at case rim...would see if it still fits the case gauge.

In my experience, I am not that hard up for brass. I would just smash & toss.

Dent's don't bother me. Creases do.

While I'd hate to waste quality once fired brass., I use the same rule as old leftover food: "When in doubt, throw it out."

Same cases, more pics. The laying down one is the one from the Scotchbrite.

The rule of thumb I use with brass is - if I'm not sure or I'm starting to second guess, I throw it out.   Life's too short to fret over it.

That's a negative from me. Any sharp lines gets tossed.

Easy.

Run them through a sizer die

Then drill a small hole through the side, making the brass completely unuseable.

Then load with bullet, NO POWDER/PRIMER. Crimp well with FCD.

Load somewhere in your mag for failure drills.

Dent: Yes, for plinking ammo.

Crease: No good.

In the new pics, top left looks good to me, throw the others in your scrap bucket.

ETA - zoomed in more...better safe than sorry, scrap them all.

Nah.... I'm cheap.. but not that cheap... life is short.

I am with Rat_Patrol...Make Dummy rounds out of them.

The risk vs. reward ratio is not in your favor.  Add them to your recycle bucket and drive on.

Those look terrible.  If they still look creased after the sizing die,...

I think the real question is this - why are they like that?

I found about a magazine's worth of them. My guess is someone's rifle was really overgassed and they ran the mag through anyways.

Scrap brass.   How about a deflector pad? No more dents, using a brass deflector pad- adhesive backed weather stripping, cut to fit and apply to rifle. Or glue on some  adhesive backed velcro

I don't think those were fired in an AR15

Could he make 9 mm cases out of them?
I've often wondered if crushed or dented case mouths could be repaired, or could they be turned into 300 Blackout brass.
Or would you just discard those too?

I found them at my fish and game club, and we don't allow FA so I can't imagine they're from a MG. That's why I figured an AR. Maybe smacking the selector on a 5.56 AK?

I would imagine you could for 300BLK. I know cutting down fired 5.56 blanks is a common practice.

I pick up a lot of 'range' brass and I have not seen any with this type of damage.  For me they would go in the scrape bucket as I have a fair amount of brass anyway.

Mini 14 would be my guess.  A guy who was shooting his Mini at the range I was at a few months ago gave me his brass.  Several looked just like that.

Toss em

If only a few were like that, maybe they were caused by double feeds.

There were 53 that I picked up that looked like that. I counted them before throwing them out last night.

I'd be willing to bet the brass would be OK to reload after FL resizing, trimming, and a flashlight inspection, etc.
I've resurrected some pretty nasty looking range and forest brass without any mishaps.

Negative,, HK  in 223/556 forms nice deep flutes in the brass..

A buddy has a sig 556 that ruins brass like that.  My 223 ar doesn't make a mark on the brass, both my 300blk ARs dent the mouth ever so slightly.

Those dents look just like my 223 AK brass.  I scrap them.
