Beautiful.

This morning I did a few measurements for my “improved” dummy rounds.  I’d spent a lot of time checking bullet lengths to decide how much of a spacer I’d need inside the case, and dug out what was left of a box of Hornady 115 bullets for the dummies.

But today I actually realized that I could have the OAL for these dummies less precise than loaded rounds because - DUH! - the only real reason to worry about precise OAL was to prevent overpressure (or under pressure) situations.  So while I’ll be using very consistent bullets, my spacers don’t have to be NASA-precise for the dummies to work.

When to the range this morning to test some 223 loads. I just can't find a load that'll shoot worth a damn. Shooting a 16" stainless aero precision upper.

Ive tried TAC, XBR, AA2520, 75gr BTHP, 68gr BTHP, 77gr Noslers, 77gr TMK. I don't think it's me. I'm at the point where I want to pull the barrel and get a Larue 18" stealth.

Before I change the barrel, I need to test some factory match loads to make sure I'm not crazy.

Have you tried something lighter? My 16"s like 55s better than anything I've tried.

"cough" if you do decide to go with Larue there's a new one on the EE for cheap.

I didn’t find anything compelling at the gun show yesterday except for the couple of folks selling used RL-550s.  One wanted $450 for the unit set up for .45 ACP, and the other wanted $350 for the press and one empty toolhead.  The second guy’s price was OK, but he didn’t have a powder measure that I could see, and he wasn’t interested in talking about price.  In the end, I decided that between stuff I have to spend money on through the rest of the year and currently limited bench space, that I’d pass on both.

Not many tables with loading components or tools this time, but it wasn’t half empty like it had been the last time I went, probably 6-8 months ago.  That’s progress, I guess.

Finally made it out to test the blue bullets in my glock 21.

Success finally with the lone wolf barrel.  No leading at all.

It would lead up so bad with plain lead that it wouldn't let rounds go into battery before you got through 60 rounds before.

I finally built a real bench.  I turned my bedroom into my workshop.  Literally.   I moved my bed into my condo's living room and made my bedroom the reloading/gun/stuff room.

Bench

Probably not the ideal way to mount my press, but the drawer prevented cam over and it was a quick way around it.

It broke the other day while using the RCBS Swage Tool 2.

The RCBS needed a firm "pop" on the upstroke to get the brass to release and it was just too much for this poor little board mounted this way.

I decided to try something different while I was rearranging my bench for a more proper mounting option.

I'm thinking the Super Swage will save me some time in the crimp removal process and it will be one less die I have to swap out.

Emptied a bunch of 5.56 reloads last Friday with no issues at all.

Reloaded a bunch of .45 round nose, some RMR, some Xtreme bullets.  I still have a bunch of empty boxes to fill.

Today I bought .44 Dillon dies, quick change kit, and conversion kit. I plan to load .44 Special first because my indoor range allows it, but no magnum.

I haven't been in here very much for the last year and have only made maybe 1k 223 rounds in that same time frame.  Ordered an Inline Fab strong mount of my press just to see check the difference out from how my set up is now. Also tagged on the ergo handle just for kicks. Ordered some Blue Bullets, 9mm 147gr to try out. Had shot alot of their 45 ACP, 200gr RN a few years back and really like them, unfortunately they don't carry them anymore.

Looking forward to getting back into the mix.

Oh yea, True Blue for the win as always.

Good to see you back.

5 single pound cans, or a 4 and a 1?  Just curious...

Yesterday I worked on my Shooting Chrony LED lighting project.  I’m working on how to diffuse the light from standard LED strips, and how to hang the lights from the Chrony’s diffuser supports - the two are related.  Making progress...

This afternoon, I cleaned a bunch of brass that I had accumulated over a couple of range trips.  A metric butt-load of it was 9mm, with a handful of 380s.  And I had a bunch of commercial 300 Blackout cases to boot.  It’s all drying in the dehydrator right now.

When it’s done and cool, I’ll sort the 9mm by crimped/uncrimped and motor on.  I currently have about a full weekend worth of de-crimping with just 9mm cases, not to mention the 5.56 and 7.62 that’s clean and ready to move on with.  It’s not a problem to do, I just keep having other loading stuff get in the way.

Started hand depriming. Alot more enjoyable in front of TV. Got the Franklin Arsenal.went through 1,000 9mm in 3 days.

Also got the Franklin Arsenal hand primer.

I find those two steps the most annoying when reloading. So hopefully this will fix that

I was set up to load 223 55 gr FMJ on the 1050.  At about the 600 round mark had a piece break.  It's about 10 years old and the first time for anything to break.  Down till the part arrives then back at it.

I'm using old components, TAC that I bought for $77/8#, bullets that I bought for $23/K and primers I've had for years.  I'm calculating that I'm loading for ~8¢ per round.  Once all these components are gone (~5K more bullets and 2 more jugs of TAC) I'm not sure if I'll load 223 FMJ any more due to the cheap prices it can be bought for now.

Loaded ~600 9mm today. Still working through the pulled bullets from American Reloading. They are plated and have a good crimp indention left on them. I had been crimping using the Hornady seating die but tried the Lee FCD today. The taper crimp just kept squeezing into the bullet but would not hold the bullet tight no matter how much crimp I used. Ended up going back to the Hornady die and all was good again.

I set up my new Dillon XL 650 and loaded 209 38 Specials ( that is all the empty brass that I had). I have been using a 550 since this month in 1988. Dillon even rebuilt it for me a few years ago. I have always lusted after the 650 and finally obtained one.

It is a whole different animal than the 550.

I’m on vacation this week, visiting my wife’s sister and brother in law.  He and I went to an indoor range - a first time experience for me.

It was really odd just leaving our brass there.  I liked the air conditioning (Florida is pretty hot and sticky right now), but I’m not sure that made up for giving away our brass.

I wasn’t able to get an answer on what they did with all the brass they sweep up daily, but there was no sign they bagged/boxed it up for sale to handloaders.

Finished the last of 1000 230gr .45ACP loads and changed the XL650 over to .44.  It is a new press conversion I just received.  I will load up a box of .44 Spl tonight with Unique and 240gr JHP and then change it to .44 Mag.

If I continue to load .44 Spl, I will want to load cheaper pills, like plated or coated.
