Today was pretty productive. My dad and I built a reloading bench finally. I also loaded up my first 223. Loaded 20 rds with 23.5gr of H335 and another 20rds with 24gr. All using 55gr hornady FMJBT. Thinking about working up another 20 rds with 24.2-3gr as well. I shoot at our camp 2hrs away in MS so I'd like to have a range of loads to test out next weekend. All ears to any other combo I should work up to bring.

Emptied some 6.5 Creedmoor cases at a PRS match. Rifle is WAY over gassed so it slung 11 cases who knows where, was unable to recover them...$$$$. Resized the ones I managed to recover and have them in the tumbler right now. Also picked up a pound of 4350 from one of the shooters, will give it a go this week with 123 A-Max. Still on the hunt for 210M primers locally.

Finished up a 1000 round run of 158 gr powder puff .38 specials for Dad, converted the 650 over to 9mm today, and ripped off 2500 rounds of 124 FMJ +P NATO clones.

Plans are for 4000 rounds total of 9mm. Then brass prep on around 10k of LC 5.56 cases will start. That will take around a week of working on it 2-3 hour a day. Luckily I don't watch TV!

My blasting load is 25.0gr off H335, with the Hornady 55gr FMJ-BT. That is generally considered a safe load, maybe alittle on the hot side. I'd make some in increments up to 25.0gr, work up carefully watching Your primers and case heads.

The guy said they were pulled demilitarized.

Today I put them in the tumbler for a few hours,  they cleaned up nice. There is still some stuff on some of them.

Eta the gun show was The Cross Roads of the West at Pima County Fair grounds.

I received my Gem Pro 250 scale today.  I'm trying to decide where to position it on my bench for a) easy access to the scale, b) easy access to AC power, and c) ease of reading the display - not necessarily in that order.  It's a really nice scale, and I'm looking forward to comparing it to my RCBS beam scale.

Thanks for that info,  I'm going to try that cleaning method  tomorrow.

Today I also primed 750 223 brass.

I did 100 with CCI BR4
100 with these old federal primers my buddy gave me
And the rest were standard Remington 7 1/2 benchrest

Today I took SBR 7-11's advice and used mineral spirits to clean this Bulk buy of pulled bullets,  and man did it work great.   That tar came right off.   Thanks for that great advice.   They look awesome now.

Loaded up some test rounds for my Rainier barreled Armalite AR10.  Test loads are with LC cases, IMR 4064, Remington primers and 168 SMK's.  To this point I have always used Varget as I have had good luck with it.  After reading some posts I have decided to try the IMR 4064 that has been sitting unused for a long time.

Last night I re-cleaned my RCBS .223 sizing die, then gave it a good spray with my alcohol/lanolin sizing lube to prevent a recurrence of my stuck case issue.  I let it sit overnight (because I went to bed early), and I reassembled the die this evening.

I'm starting to figure that I need separate loading and work benches...  I'm gonna be kinda cramped for space given the size of my "hobby room."

Took a short road trip to the Sierra factory and bought 20 pounds of blem 168 grain match kings. Hit a local reloading store on the way home and found 2 pounds of HP38. Then on the way home I hit grafs & sons and bought 10 pounds of varget with some primers. Good reloading weekend so far!!

I discovered that my RCBS .223 dies, which work fine in my Rock Chucker, have to be turned down so far in my Hornady LnL AP that the press cams-over.  Not good.  So I ordered a set of Hornady .223 dies, which should be here on Monday.  Then, since I'd done all my 300 Blackout forming on the Rock Chucker, I carefully readjusted that sizing die to calibrate it for use on the LnL AP, so I can start processing some fired (i.e. already converted) brass.

Cruised through a small local gun show. Bought nothing. Lots of primers at 33.00/k and lots of powder at 30.00/lb. not terrible prices, but when you are stocked deep, you get picky!

Well I learned some things today while testing my first 223 loads. 1- I severely need to practice marksmanship fundamentals.  2 - I need to build at least a 16" upper, only rifle I have right now is a 11.5 sbr. Other than that, all my different loads ran in my gun 100%. I had 4 different loads: 23.5, 24, 24.2, and 24.5 grains of H335. Bullet was a 55gr hornady FMJBT. I think I am going to go with my 24gr load for my plinking rounds. Once I build a more appropriate upper, I will work up more of a precision load. Really looking forward to that.

I have limited Internet right now so I will update this post with some (embarassing) target pics. I don't think the short barrel, mil spec trigger, jerking the trigger, not being very steady, helped with accuracy . I will get better with time and practice.

Eta results:

This is how I had the rifle set up at first. Took off the irons and put on this bushnell 4x scope we had laying around. Not very ideal what so ever.

These were the results from my first round of shooting at 100 yards. Target pattern is the same for all the pictures: top left is 23.5gr, top right is 24gr, bottom left is 24.2gr, bottom right is 24.5gr. Very shitty groups. Like I said, I need practice.

I decided to see what my uncle had laying around and found a Pentax 4-12x. Slapped her on. Mo powah is mo betta.

This is the group I shot with the new scope. Still shitty, but "better".

I was getting quite frustrated with my shooting, so I moved the target up to 50yds to try and get a better grasp on which load was more accurate.

This was the first round at 50.

They the last 5 shot groups I had. Still at 50.

So in the end I settled on 24gr as my plinking load until I get a chrony and decide otherwise. This was really fun and now I will be building a 16" gun and work on my shooting...a lot.

Do you know what kind of velocity you are getting with 24gr? I am running 25grs out of a 10.5" and am curious about the velocity.

I do the same thing at my local shop since they offer a 10% discount for military.

Ordered 100 .45 ACP 230gr. Remington Golden Saber bullets along with 100 pcs. of nickel plated Starline brass

Quite expensive per rd. ($.75+ ) but will probably use them for self defense ammo if they feed reliably (Colt Series 80)

I'm set with yellow brass both once fired and new. But the nickel plating along with that brass bullet should make for one pretty looking round

Went the range today with the old lady and our son.  Had a great time making empty brass.

For once we were able to be at the range by ourselves which is very rare and when that happens we are allowed to pick up range scrap lead as long as you don't dig through the berms.

We made off with 15 pounds in less then 5 minutes.
