I just bought a rock river varmint with a 1:8 twist 18 inch barrel. I was hoping you guys could save me some time and money and let me know what has been the most accurate out of the box ammo you have used. Any information would be helpful. I just dont think it would be very cost effective to reload. Thanks for the help!

If it's the SS bull barrel then I've got the same gun. It shoots 69 grain SMKs very well, but really loves 75 grain Hornady bullets. Sub-moa if I do my part. Factory ammo is too expensive for the amount of shooting I like, so I reload.

A buddy shot mine with 69gr Black Hills, it liked that. That was the heaviest he had. The groups got increasing ly better as the bullets got heavier from 55gr to the 69gr.

I will get some 75 and 77 gr bullets one of these days to try.

Mine will shoot almost anything I reload very well, I haven't shot anything factory through it yet.

It likes everything from the 36gr varmint grenades to 77gr SMK's.

The only thing I have found is the faster you drive the bullet the better that gun shoots.

My advice would be to buy a box of each type of ammo you are considering and shoot a ten shot group to see how it does.
Its not the guy that walks in with a gun and says he is going to start shooting that you have to worry about.
Its the guy that just walks in and just starts shooting.

Hornady 60gr vmax is the best I've found. Expensive as heck though.

I had mine out for a walk today. I shot 5, 5 shot strings and recorded the best group.

Federal XM193 shot at .888
Federal XM855 shot at .633

The XM193 is hit or miss on groups, all i have shot was federal. I'd like to try some IMI stuff but havn't got my hands on any yet. M855 consistancy is much better then that of the m193.

I havn't shot any out of the box match bullets, i handload all my match stuff.

I would try prvi partizan 69 and 75 grain ammo. I shoot their 75 grain ammo all the time, and have found it to be more accurate than I am. Another low cost alternative is hornady 75 grain pratice tap. Both are about 40 cents a round. They aint black hills with 77 grain SMKs, but they're close enough for me.

I've been impressed with the accuracy of Southwest's 77 grain "run n gun" load. For the money, it's amazing. http://www.southwestammunition.com/product_p/55677smk-rng%20-%20case.htm

I have been looking at that for a while I think I will pick some up for my 18inch 1:8.

I actually just shot the 55 vmax's and wasn't that impressed with them. I would like to use whatever load I find on prairie dogs. Most of the prairie dogs around here are educated so I need to be able to reach out to three to four hundred yards.

Check this thread there are a couple of load recommendations.

Might have more luck in the reloading forum.

Just shot mine (18" ATH upper) yesterday with some Black Hills 75 gr. Match HP and it really liked them. I am going to try some 69 gr. Match HP Black Hills next week.

Shot my 1/8 RRA Varmint 16" yesterday.

77 gr SMK shot about 2"

69 gr SMK about 1.25"

62 gr SS 109 pulled shot 3"

All loaded with Varget a grain or so under max load and .005 off the lands.

Agreed. I push them pretty hard with TAC and they do serious damage to varmints.

Most accurate box ammo.

We don't shoot factory ammo here, we reload more accurate ammo that is custom tuned to our rifles.

Maybe a poor choice of terms?

If you want to know about factory ammo, I suggest going to the Ammo Forum under the AR 15 tab.

If you want to which bullets we prefer in our handloads, you are at the right place.

Good luck either way.
