THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
Post links to "Interesting and Useful" threads in the Reloading Forum here. This allows anyone to in effect tack any thread they want to the top of the forum.

"Rules" -

- Include all the links you want to add in your original post.

- Don't include duplicate links, or at least make an attempt to avoid duplicates. That means you ought to read this thread before adding a link.

- A short one line clarification of the information in the link is okay. Don't write a book.

- Use the thread title in the link with this format. This helps everyone remember the original thread. Add the thread author if you want:

Is 25.5 gr of Varget asking for Ka-Boom?

- Try to keep it to truly useful information. Links to time sensitive information such as "where can I buy" do not qualify. Use good judgement.

- Links to other forums are okay. Identify the linked forum. Don't violate the CoC. Duh.

The point is to make useful information that has already been posted easily accessible. I can mark these threads to keep them out of the archive, but I'm not going to mark every thread that comes along. You can even start a thread, then link it here. This works best if the author notifies me or dryflash3 that a new thread has been added so we can set the archive toggle, we might not notice a new post added to the thread.

SS-109 loads,

I used the start loads for the Speer 62 gr FMJBT (lead core), and worked up.

In my rifle these loads are safe, and are 1/2 gr below the first signs of pressure.

All these loads use LC brass trimmed to 1.750, neck deburred inside and out.

Primer pocket swaged, Win SR, pulled SS-109 62 gr FMJBT seated to mid cannelure.

Crimped with a Lee FCD (factory crimp die).

My rifle has a 1 in 9 twist, 16 ", 5.56 chamber.

AA-2230, 24.5 grs. Shoots great.

H-335, 25.0 grs. OK load, just that other powders are more accurate. ( In my rifle)

BLC2, 26.0 grs. My favorite SS-109 load.

Varget, 26.5 grs. Most accurate SS-109 load in my rifle. Just a hassle to load.

Tac, 26.0 grs. Another good load.

W-748 25.5 grs. Not accurate in my rifle, your rifle might like.

Remember to work your loads up, your rifle may be different from mine. YMMV.

Good casing stress and strain modeling:

Go Here:

http://www.varmintal.com/a243z.htm

This will make your head spin initially, but it is chocked full of good info.
Thanks to Varmint Al and his sponsors and LS-DYNA for making this available.
FEA stress modeling and results are only as good as the inputs, but this model
seems to be well done.

Note the high stresses near the junction of the casing body and the head. There are complex stress fields occuring there because:
1. casing is losing grip on the chamber, as chamber wall falls way into the unsupported portion.
2. casing thickness is transitioning from almost constant thickness to a thicker head section.
3. a bending stress field is superimposed on the membrane stresses at that point due to loss of chamber support radially.
4. hardness of the casing material is increasing at that point.
5. etc.

It is easy to see how the famous internal crack can originate at the red intensity location and go undetected.

Near the bottom, one can see the derivation of the radial expansion check numbers (permanent increase in web diameter). SAAMI allows 62,000psi for .308's which is very similar to this model (.243), but SAAMI limits for most rifle chambers are 50-55 thousand psi. Also note the origin of the "flattened primer" indicating high pressures and the trip that the primer takes during the pressure excursion.

RCBS Pro 2000 Mod 1: APS Strip-feed Control. RCBS Pro 2000 Mod 2: Primer Rod Stop

These simple Mods, that anybody can do in one evening, remove the only negatives of using RCBS's otherwise superior and safer APS priming system.
Mod 1: The RCBS Pro 2000 Primer Strip Feed mechanism can be made to go off-line at will.
Mod 2: A tool to control the Press's Primer Insertion Stroke...stops the primer rod before it touches a strip.
