Thought I’d share a quick Review & some Pics of the New GSG MP40 22.

If any of you have any experience with the GSG STG44, and are happy with it, then you’ll be EXTREMELY HAPPY with the MP40.  The MP40’s Build Quality, Size, Weight, and Attention-To-Detail, mirror the STG44’s.  I’m a fan of WW-II Guns, and while I’ll never afford a Real STG44 or MP40….. I just don’t have $20K+ hiding in my Piggy Bank….. I’ll own what I CAN afford, and have FUN with them.

Here we go…..

PACKAGING:

As with the STG44, the MP40 comes in a Wooden Crate, made by Amish Carpenters.  The MP40’s Crate is about Two-Thirds the size of the STG44’s Crate.  The Crate is packed into a Hard Sturdy Cardboard Box, and lined with Cardboard Shims, to keep the Crate centered in the Box.

More Cardboard Packing inside the Crate.  I kinda got excited when I opened the top, and saw a Drum Box inside.  I thought I had somehow managed to get a FREE Drum.  Naaa….. just a chunk of Packing Cardboard in the shape of one.

CONTENTS:

Inside is the MP40 (NOTE:  You’ll need to remove the Left Phillips Head Screw on the Left Brace, holding the Mag Well down in the Crate.  Once you remove the Screw, just slide the Brace clear of the Mag Well to remove the Gun.).  Other contents include:

- 2 22-Round Polymer Magazines (Earlier during the Shot Show, there was a HINT that there would be Metal Mags for the MP40.  However, the Mags are the same Excellent Quality as the GSG-MP5’s Mags.  Solid and Sturdy!)

- Registration Card

- GSG Accessories Brochure

- GSG Decal

- Owner’s Manual

- Padlock

- Bag of Tools & Spare Front Sights containing, Cleaning Brush, Chamber Safety Flag, 4 Different Size Spare Front Sight Posts, and 3 Different Size Allen Wrenches.

MP40:

Left Side of Magwell:

Left Side of Receiver & Grip:

Left Side of Barrel & Suppressor:

Right Side of Mag Well:

Right Side of Bolt/Ejector Port:

Right Side:

Stock Release Push-Button:

Stock Unfolded & Extended:

Mag Release Push-Button:

MAGAZINES:

2 22-Round Polymer Magazines:

“MADE IN GERMANY” Stamp:

22 Rounds (Maybe 23???):

Polymer Mag Followers:

Mag Inserted (NOTE:  Mags fit PERFECTLY into the Mag Well.  No Wobble, No Loose Fit, and No Gaps!)

Safety Knob (NOTE:  The Arrow on the Bottom of the Safety Knob, points to “S” for “SAFE”.  When the Gun is on “SAFE”, you can see an “S” on both sides of the Gun, and the Arrows are pointing Left & Right.  On the Left and Right of the Arrows, is an “F” for “FIRE”.  When the Knob is turned with the Arrows pointing Front to Back, the “F” is visible on both sides of the Gun.)

SIGHTS:

The Rear Sight has Dual Leaf Apertures, with the Forward Leaf in a Fixed Position for Short Range Firing.  The Rear Leaf folds Up to Fire Long Distance.  The 3 Pics are: Rear Leaf Folded, Rear Leaf Up, and Rear Leaf Toggled in between, to show it folding.

Front Sight Beaded Sight Post with Hood:

My first impressions of the MP40 are good.  I’m hoping to get it to the Range this weekend, and throw some Lead out of the Pointy End.  If it’s anything like its STG44 Brother, the MP40’s gonna be a lot of FUN!

For those of you that get your hands on one, don’t be ticked off at the Build Quality!  Remember… the Original MP40’s were Stamped Metal, to cut down on costs and increase a high number of Guns.  If it went “BANG”, then it did its job.  They were built to be Functional… Not Pretty!

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!

BTW….. I modified my MP40 Repro Case, to allow the Suppressor to go through the bottom of the bag, using my wife’s Seam Ripper, so I wouldn’t tear a hole in the bag.  I bought a Muzzle Cover to tie over the Suppressor when it’s in the Case, to keep crud out of it at the Range.  It has 5 Pouches on the Outside for Mags, and a Smaller Pouch for the Original Mag Loader, that WILL NOT fit our 22 Cal Mags.  The Mag Loaders Push-Pin is too wide for the 22’s Follower, and may break the Feed Lips.  Use the Slider Button on the Mag to Load it for now, until something comes from the Minds of MagLula!

I’ll post a Pic of the Case and Muzzle Cover tomorrow.

Cheers!

BB

Great pics.  Thanks for posting although you will surely cost me money.  Have you seen any spare mags for sale for these yet?

I still got 'em

MP40

The packaging for spare mags was delayed unfortunately so hopefully I will be able to bring in extra mags next month.  Thats why this is the first GSG to ever come with 2 mags.  Once extra mags start flowing the Germans are going to go down to 1 mag I believe.

Hey OP, can you take a few pics with the fake suppressor removed?  I am thinking of getting one and after I get my tax stamp have the barrel cut back to flush with the front sight.

Q!

The Trigger is smooth.  Little bit of Creep, but no Grit that I can tell.  As soon as I get some Frog Lube on the Internals, everything should operate nicely!

FiremanFrank!

Refer to Christopher's Post from ATI, above.  Looks like another month before the Spares will start coming in.  I'm on a Wait List from my Dealer, with a Request for 4 Additional Mags.  I gotta fill up those Empty Mag Pouches on my Case.

FiremanFrank!

Here's a Web Pic of a 9mm MP40, with a Barrel Nut on it.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/7c/MP_40_AYF_2.JPG/300px-MP_40_AYF_2.JPG

Notice the Barrel End is NOT flush with the Front Sight.  When you see my pics below, you should be able to pop a Barrel Nut on with the Threaded Barrel End, if you cut the Extra Barrel Length off just in front of the Threads.

Here ya go...

Suppressor Removed:

Threaded End:

Front Sight Hood Slides Forward, so you can change out the Front Sight with the Spare Different Size Sights, that are included in the Small Bag in the Crate.  NOTE the Dovetail on the Front Sight Post that's currently installed.  Should be an Easy Swap if you choose to go to a Higher Sight:

Pics of my MP40 Canvas Case, with 5 Mag Pouches, 1 Small Pouch for the Original Mag Loader (WILL NOT FIT OUR 22 MAGS!), and an Internal Pouch for the MP40:

For Size Comparison, I took a pic of it on the MP40's Crate also:

British Enfield Muzzle Cover Repro, with Leather Tip to cover the Crown.  I rolled mine down a bit, since it was too long, but it covers the Suppressor well.

5 External Mag Pouches:

Mags Fit Perfectly!

Flyer!

I'm assuming when you said you wanted 6 Mags to fill your Mag Pouches, you were referring to this style?  If YES... then the Mags will fit into the MP40 Pouches.  They're Repros made within the same Mil-Spec as the Canvas Case I have.

Mag Loader Pouch at Top of Case.  I'm keeping my Spare Sights & Tool Bag inside of the Pouch:

MP40 Position in the Case:

Mag Capacity..... 23 ROUNDS!!!  I loaded a Mag today, with Plastic Polymer Snap Caps, to see exactly how many Rounds the 22-Round Mags will hold.  FYI, you may have to Adjust Your Number of Rounds Loaded, if you're getting FTL's (Failure To Load).  When you Count them in the Pic... SOMEONE always does... there are 2 under the Top Round, behind the Black Polymer.

Top Round points upward, in position to slide up the Feed Ramp on the MP40:

I wanted to share a little info with some of you, that have never had a 22 Cal Gun.  In General, it's NEVER ok to Dry Fire a 22, regardless if it's a Pistol or Rifle.  Unlike Center Fire Guns, where the Firing Pin will be centered, and Strike within the Open Barrel Chamber... hitting nothing..., the Firing Pin on a Rim Fire Gun, will Strike the Face of the Chamber, and done enough times, it will Bend, Deform, or Break the Firing Pin.  Best Advice I can offer, is to use Dummy Rounds or Snap Caps to Test Fire your 22's after you Clean them, or... you can pull the Bolt back slightly, where the Bolt Face isn't touching the Chamber Face, and then pull the Trigger.  I'd Highly Recommend the Snap Caps, however, because you can leave them in the Chamber once you've pulled your Trigger for a Test Fire.  It's not good to leave a Gun Cocked for any length of time, as it keeps the Spring(s) Compressed, and over time, will weaken them.  Just my $.02 being offered!

Cheers!
