I need a good dual purpose tomahawk for tactical use and field ops. What's the best that's reasonably priced and fairs well when forced into service as a light hatchet for cutting wood? Thanks!

Thanks for the advice. I ordered a CRKT Chogan. Let you know how it turns out.

Good man. Glad I could help. I love my shrike, but I was playing around with one of the crkt and could not find a single way they skimped on quality over the originals.

I actually wish they would do a Kangee bit with the hammer pole. And also wish they would stop sharpening/grinding the back of the beard.

The sharpened beard is the most attractive feature of the Chogan, IMO.

OP can you define tactical and field ops?  Definitive uses always help.

BTW Good advice above, I am now ordering one each of the CRKTs listed above.

Left is an SOG, right is an Ontario.  I think the Ontario is better for cutting wood, and general use.

I despise spike hawks, I absolutely do not want a close quarters tool to be pointy on both ends.

That said, unsharpening the underside of the bit shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

I've kept a Skatchet in my Jeep bag for decades.  Too bad they aren't made anymore.  Without the handle, which is made in the field, they are small and relatively light.  The hammerhead comes in handy.

Grunsfors Bruk outdoor hatchet

I've generally found tomahawks useless in comparison.

Cold Steel Hawk with a longer handle works for me and is cheaper.

What it looked like with the longer handle, Rust-Oleum paint,  and 550 cord.

Why look for an old one?

If you look around, you can find a new one at Sears. The 22 ounce Half Hatchet by Craftsman. $10.54 before sales tax. Find a 16-18 inch handle for it that maybe costs $5. It will be half the price of a CS Rifle Hawk and US made.

Funny you should mention that.  I frequently go to locations where "weapons" aren't allowed.  Carry a fixed blade knife and you're busted.  However, no one has ever blinked an eye at my roofing hammer and insulation knife.

Heck, even security guards know that Klein makes electrical tools, not weapons.
